Curious about my carnivore story?
My own journey back to health and an appropriate weight has been a crazy ride. At one time I was a raw vegan chef traveling the country teaching people to make all sorts of dishes with fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. My health took a big hit, and as I continued to study, I discovered why meat is a critical dietary requirement. But, I had never heard of eating meat only so I continued struggling to figure out the appropriate human diet. I knew the SAD wasn’t working!
Then I was hit with the devastating loss of my only child, my son, Levi. I no longer cared about diet, about health, or even about living. I literally began trying to kill myself with food. This went on for several years and you can see by the picture above how badly I had abused my body. I was overweight, pre-diabetic, and was having bloating and joint pain issues. My doctor had also left me a message that I needed to come in and get on meds for high cholesterol. I ignored that request.
I began searching for the right way to eat because I know that diet is one of the most powerful ways that we have control over our own health. I played with Paleo for a few years but never committed 100% to that way of eating. I know that grief played a role in my not being ready, but it was the food too. When I finally decided it was time to reclaim my health and lose the weight I discovered the Keto diet. Total fail for me – I wasn’t interested in counting ANYTHING.
Then I heard about the carnivore diet and I thought, “well, that’s crazy.” But I saw a video about losing weight quickly doing this for 30 days. So, I gave it a try. I knew that first week that this was right for me. Today (at 60 years old), the carnivore way of eating has drastically improved my life. I eat 100% animal products preferring red meat over any other type of food. I also eat a few eggs each week, some bacon occasionally. I drink only water (still and sparkling mineral water) and some coffee with cream.
