Thyroid & hormones

Olivia improved hair, skin, thyroid, Hashimoto’s, PCOS on carnivore diet

I started following Shawn Baker around November of 2018 when I started to get serious about weight loss. I’m 29 years old and have been suffering all through my 20s with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and PCOS. I was on a program of supplements and shakes with 4-5 meals a day consisting of only oven baked chicken and vegetables and although I was losing weight I was also miserable with what I was eating and unable to eat so much. I decided to give carnivore a try and I am so happy I did.

I went from 250 lbs down to 210 lbs in 3 months. My hair is growing back longer and stronger, my mood is better, my skin is clearer, my inflammation is gone, my energy is up and I feel absolutely amazing. I practice intermittent fasting with 1-2 meals a day consisting of red meat. I’m almost completely off my thyroid medication and I see no need to ever stop this way of eating! Thank you to the whole meat heals community for continuing to inspire and motivate!!

Elainie improved digestion, autoimmune issues, Hashimoto’s on carnivore diet

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s over 30 years ago. During that time I had been a macrobiotic vegan, grew up veg and never felt well, energy nor digestive wise. That led to what I perceive as a lifetime of dietary experimentation, WAP, raw primal, raw paleo, raw vegan of every variety, including 80/10/10 which almost landed me in the hospital as my TSH shot up past 650.

I have been paleo, whole 30, AIP and the whole gamut. After being keto once again for 3 months I decided to take the carnivore plunge 7 months ago. I have not looked back. Just got my blood panel back saying, “You may not actually need ANY more thyroid horomone again. Let’s do a recheck panel in 6 weeks.”

I am elated, of course I have never felt better in my life, carni diet gave me back my vitality, and I do not suffer digestive issues as I did when ingesting plants. Red meat is my favorite but I also eat fish, game, seafood, organ meats, eggs and some raw dairy. I eat animal food both raw and seared blue. It is a most gratifying way of life, my mental state is calm and I have great clarity of mind. It has in essence transformed my life at 52 years young.

Doug improved adrenal health, psoriasis, sciatica on carnivore diet

Greetings, my name is Doug, I’m 28 years young 6’5, 192lbs and have been practicing a mostly carnivore diet with the exception of social situations for 8 months now. Prior to practicing a carnivorous diet I was plant based, with a focus on detoxification, fasting, raw foods and lots of fruit to reverse chronic issues.

I’ll share my background and why I began a plant based diet.

At age 19 I was living a not so health conscious lifestyle, consuming copious amounts of fast food while actively involved in MMA, competitive paintball (NPPL) and riding quads. It wasn’t long before I deteriorated 2 lumbar disks, developed a bulging disk, fractured and dislocated my L5 vertebrae. It became very difficult for me to deal with the injuries and not being able to participate in the activities I was so passionate about. I ended up spiraling downward and consuming even more junk as well as drinking alcohol and using other substances for the first time as a coping mechanism.

Fast forward a year or so and I was a wreck. At this point I had chronic joint and back pain, skin rashes covering a 1/3 of my body, under active thyroid which made it almost impossible to sweat, BP of 85/50, chronic fatigue, chronic constipation and a list of mental and emotional issues to top it off. Oh, and did I forget to mention the Neurospine institute diagnosed me with osteoarthritis?

I sought help from so many doctors and experts and all I ended up with was a dried up bank account. this is when I found, not just any plant based diet, but the MUCUSLESS DIET HEALING SYSTEM… by Arnold Ehret. He proposed that mucus forming foods are the cause of human illness and that man was biologically designed to consume only fruits and tender leafy greens. I jumped right in and began living on fruits and salads. Boy did I lose weight fast… From 200 down to 140 in 6 months. I will say that I felt less inflammation and eating so much from really helped with flushing out pounds of impacted fecal matter from the garbage I was consuming. I felt loads better with the removal of all the junk and still having the nutrient reserves to function. I eventually balanced out with cooked starches and heavier foods where I got back to around 160 pounds. At this point the skin rashes cleared up, I had less inflammation and overall felt much better although I felt very weak and was developing a poor relationship with food as I couldn’t EVER find satiation with my meals of fruit, salads, nuts or starches. This way of eating continued for the next 4 years.

During my plant based journey I became certified as a detox specialist, iridologist and took plant based nutrition courses to learn as much as possible.

After a couple years into a plant based diet I began experiencing bouts of depression that progressively got worse as the years went on. My last bout of depression was crippling and lasted a couple months where I shut myself off from the world and didn’t want to be awake. Some of the other issues that had had been progressively getting worse was my digestion. I would constantly feel bloated and fatigued after meals. Socially I became a recluse and didn’t feel comfortable around people who ate animals foods lol I was also an active member in the Dr. Robert Morse cult that brain wash people into believing we are a frugivore species. This was especially damaging because I felt I was harming my body if I wasn’t eating fruit or tender greens.

In December 2016 I had hit rock bottom and fell into the most challenging bout of depression yet. I slept and binge ate vegan junk food for month. I was now 205 lbs of tub and edema. I left the country in Jan 2017 to pull myself out of it. I wen to Costa Rica and began a 95 day coconut WATER only fast from fresh coconuts. to my surprise this was probably the best I ever felt during my plant based journey. As soon as I reintroduced solid food I began binging again. Within 6 months my digestion tanked and I was worse off, unable to digest any plant foods. At this point I was traveling to different countries around the world and it was a struggle just to go from one hostel to another. I remember waking up with such a horrible feeling in my guts and feeling overwhelming anxiety while in a tropical paradise. I purchased a blood glucose monitor at some point. I would eat a couple mangoes and my blood sugar would shoot up over 250. This gave me a feeling of brain fog and fatigue.

In the beginning of this year (2018) I began making this joke while traveling in Asia, “I want beef” and watching YouTube channels of people who ate only animal foods. Ok so At this point I was miserable and didn’t know what to do. I literally couldn’t digest anything and felt depressed, slept 12-15 hours a day and my joint pain was horrible! I came across Aajonus Vonderplanitz and reads his book. He said that red meat cures depression and is a great food for recovering from frutarianism. I walked down to a market, purchased lamb ate it, digested it well and it was like a like came on.

The feelings of depression and anxiety diminished over night as well as the chronic fatigue. For the next couple weeks I lived on eggs, butter and ribeye steaks. Everyday I was feeling so much better and mentally stable. Those last two weeks in the tropics were incredible. My digestive fire came back very quickly and my strength began sky rocketing. At this point my vegan wife now began eating animal foods and reaping the benefits as well. I felt Like I was reborn. The feeling of satiation after eating is priceless.

After leaving the tropics I flew to Washington and began practicing a strict carnivore diet where I consumed 2-3 pounds of beef a day with some butter. Over the course of 6 months I gained 30 lbs of lean mass while at the very same time felt less joint pain and inflammation then I did on a fruitarian or plant based diet. My complexion was much better as well. After spending 6 months on a carnivore diet I can now digest plant foods once again but choose to avoid them with the exception of social situations.

It’s now been 8 months mostly carnivore and I can honestly say I’m in the best shape of my life without any major health challenges and now strength train on a regular basis without issues. Meat NEVER gets boring and I’m always happy with a pound of beef and some fat on my plate and leave feeling content and happy. I consume more than double the caloric intake from when I was plant based and only got lean and muscular. This way of eating may not be for everyone but it sure does work well for me and has really helped pull me out of a very dark place.

My top fav foods are beef, liver, heart, bone marrow, beef fat, eggs and kefir

Thank you!!!!
Doug

Patricia resolves fatigue, exercise intolerance on carnivore diet

At 68 years young, Patricia has been on the carnivore diet for 3 1/2 months. Her diet consists primarily of beef, salt, suet, water and organ supplements such as liver, bone marrow, thymus and bovine cartilage with the occasional addition of egg yolks.

As a young adult, she had lots of fatigue, had to take lots of naps and go to bed very early. “I needed ten hours of sleep and I was just always very tired. I couldn’t do what other people my age could do. My fatigue was just absolutely debilitating. I was bedridden.” She had also been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and was working with a holistic practitioner: a doctor of functional medicine. In addition, Patricia had digestion problems. Bowel incontinence caused her to be running to the bathroom all the time. All of this plus a terrible bout with hypoglycemia since age 28.

Three years ago, she went on a Paleo diet and did get considerably better. She felt that although the Paleo diet did produce results, it was very regimented. She estimates that she took dietary supplements to the tune of a thousand dollars per month. Some were to be taken on an empty stomach and some with meals. Patricia felt that she really didn’t have a life: making sure that supplements were always taken at the right time, making sure that there was always something to eat that was within the confines of the Paleo diet, preparing meals, preparing vegetables. She couldn’t do what other people her own age did like stay up at night and have friends over. Something had to change. Enter the carnivore diet.

Patricia watched and listened to videos by Drs. Paul Saladino, Shawn Baker and Ken Berry and felt she was now equipped to begin the carnivore diet. Within a few days of being on the diet her digestion had improved remarkably. She was stunned. Within a week, she started to feel more energized and didn’t have to take naps. The hypoglycemia was gone and she didn’t have to eat every few hours. Her tolerance for exercise was greatly improved. She was starting to build muscle which she noticed especially in her legs.

Her doctor tested her thyroid function and determined that there has been great improvement. And lastly, her arthritis has improved.

Patricia is very appreciative to Dr. Baker for all that he is doing. “So I just feel like I got my life back on this diet. I see absolutely no reason I’ll ever go back to the way I used to eat.”

Marcos improved strength, stamina, and recovery on a carnivore diet

I’m a 50 year old former athlete. I’ve started Karate at the age of 12. It was brutal back then but somehow I decided to endure and, before I knew it, I was hooked.

I started entering tournaments in my first year and at 15 I was training 6 hours per day. Before 18 I was doing 8+ hours of training everyday at the dojo and with the Rio de Janeiro team and at 22 I was winning in the national championships.

I’m not a tall guy with only 5ft 5in height but even though I was very lean my weight was 187 pounds. I used to eat everything in my way in huge amounts without never getting fat due to extreme long training sessions.

Though Karate can be very rough and we did get hurt a lot I was healthy as one can be, very strong, fast and never got tired. I looked good and life was easy.

Retirement

After several years as a professional athlete I had an accident while training and broke my jaw in 2 different places. I was submitted to a surgery where they put my jaw back in place and hold it with a titanium wire. I had to stay still for 2 months with steel wires around my teeth. It was at the end of the University and I was offered a job as character animator in a famous studio here. I took it.

I’ve got back to training as soon as the doctors let me but now, instead of training 8 hours I was sitting 8 hours drawing and only training 1 hour a day. My career  as an athlete was over. I kept teaching, training and weight lifting and even training Judo, as well as other Martial Arts, but never with the same intensity as before.

Weight Gain

After 30, without the brutal daily training and with the huge food consumption I started to gain a little weight. Then I got married and started working even more hours every day while exercising less and less until I stopped completely for some time.

At 40 I was sedentary weighting 260 pounds. I knew I was going to pay the price for that lifestyle and started to “eat healthy” and started training again. I did loose weight but I always get some of it back again. In time I was able to intensify my training and started to feel pain in the joints afterwards. I thought I needed to increase my strength and started weightlifting again.

At 49 I was in good condition. I was lifting really heavy weights, fighting bigger and younger guys. I had good stamina and I did several 5 min rounds daily. With all that, I kept strugling to mantain my weight and though I was eating paleo and went keto for some time, the weight I lose always seem to come back to me again.

Endocrinologist

I was doing everything right, according to common knowledge, and wasn’t getting the results everyone would expect. I went to see a doctor. An endocrinologist  famous for the results he achieves with his patients. He interviewed me thoroughly and took almost all my blood for testing and came with the news: “You f**d up your metabolism!”
My hormones were good for my age and the testosterone was “very good” according to him, but he wanted to give me hormones to fasten things up.

I said no.

The only thing left to do, he said, was to increase my metabolism and intensify my workouts. I had just turned 50 and despite my physical condition was way better than 10 years earlier, it was very hard to lose weight or even avoid gaining even more.

I turned 50 in December 2017 and though I felt stronger and with good stamina, but paid a heavy price after every intense training session. I realized that one, or even two, heavy intense short training (40 min) sessions per day were better than long lighter ones.

Carnivore

I’ve discovered this WOE in 2018 after dieting for 2 months without great results. After digging thoroughly for 2 weeks I decided to give it a try on February 10th and started to see the results at once.

I like meat. I always did. But to see at last that I don’t need anything else is simply perfect!

The weight started to drop since the first week. The bloated belly emptied away and the joints began to feel better. After 1 week I felt migraines for 2 days. I even felt feverish for one night but I kept myself on track…

Everything was different afterwards.

The rest of the month was smooth. After 50 days I got my blood tested and the numbers were all better, thoug they were never bad. The testosterone levels went even higher and I feel great.

After 100 days I am 40 pounds leaner and I don’t think I lost muscle. I feel stronger and the stamina increased. I’m punching harder even with less weight and despite the fact that I never lost flexibility, I can kick higher, faster and with less effort. 1 training session every day. Some days I do it twice a day. One extreme and intense, the other more technical and less demanding.

I have no cravings. I haven’t had any vegetal fiber since the first day. Just some seasoning such as peppers, dry garlic powder and a bit of sea salt in my meals. I drink only water, an ocasional black unsweetened coffee and, at home, I make yerba mate infusion. Nothing else.

I usually have 1 to 1.3 pound of meat once a day. If I go hungry after the evening training session, I take some Bacon and eggs, but normally I eat only once.

My mind is sharp as it can be. No joint pains or digestive issues. I’m never tired, even after long training sessions, and I sleep as a rock. Still losing weight and I feel the testosterone may be increasing even more…

I hope to lose more 15 or 17 pounds until June 23rd when I’ll be tested for 5th Dan.

Lori improved strength and lost weight on a carnivore diet

Lori

I’m a 52 year old female. Mother of two grown sons, and busy with lots of homemaking and volunteer work. I don’t have a radical healing success story. But, it’s still big to me and my life. I had been overweight and miserable for 30 years. Over a year ago I found the keto diet and was able to lose 50 pounds and drastically reduce problems with a thyroid autoimmune condition. I even got off my meds before weight loss stalled. Like, stalled completely. No matter what I did. I was discouraged.

Obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease are rampant in my family. I knew this was my future if I didn’t find a way to finish this journey.

I was finally within a few pounds of a healthy body weight. And yet, the body composition was way off. I still had fat around the middle and felt I needed to be fitter. I’d been reading posts on this page for a while but was hesitant to try. But I really wanted to reach my goal of getting healthy and aging well, medication free.

So I started carnivore. I wondered if this change would help me be able to lose fat and build muscle even at my age. Within days, my belly was shrinking and the bloating was gone. My workouts were easier and I felt stronger. I began to run farther and could do 50 pushups without stopping. I loved the food! I eat meat, eggs, and add cream to my coffee. I occasionally have some cheese or plain Greek yogurt. I eat until I’m full and haven’t counted a macro yet! I eat 2 meals a day, zero hunger. Zero autoimmune symptoms.

So… after only 8 weeks, I’m shocked by the carnivore success. I lost 13.2 pounds. But the real winner is that I decreased my body fat percentage by 2.3%. And I increased skeletal muscle by 4.5%!

I feel wonderful! And my family has been so supportive of this lifestyle change. (Except for one older male family member who stated in his southern accent, “that doesn’t sound very lady-like”, ha!) So I think I’m a carnivore for life. I feel like this is the beginning of freedom, rooted in simplicity. I’ve even had people tell me I’m reverse aging. Meat heals but it also fuels the awesomeness of a radically healthy, energetic life!

Ernest healed seborrheic keratosis on a carnivore diet

Ernest

I was inspired to ZC by Kelly Hogan’s experience last year. Later I discovered Shawn Baker, Charles Washington and others, and the ancestral angle won me. So I went full on carnivore for 5 months and the Seborrheic Keratosis that were popping up all over my face and chest disappeared. Also, eczema on face and hands resolved. For some STUPID reason, I went back to keto, I think because it seemed like the weight loss was faster. The eczema returned, so in March 2019 I went back to carnivore full time, forever I hope. It has helped with everything except my Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, but it has only been 7 months this time, so will see. My doctor doesn’t like my LDL numbers, but I have done a lot of research and given him printouts of studies contradicting his point and statins, which I refuse. I am 70 years old and we agree to disagree.

My daughter (shown with me hiking in Big Bend Nat’l Park Labor Day) is a 34 year vegetarian. We don’t argue. In fact, it works out. I can order a ribeye when we eat out and she gets my salad and sides! Emotional values (like feeling sorry for animals) cannot be won over with logic, so why bother? Oh, I have also lost 50 lbs, from 230 to 180. I worked in the Alaskan Arctic for 30 years and had many Inupiaq Eskimos for friends. I know how they used to eat and survived in the harshest environment on earth for thousands of years. And I have more Neanderthal in me than about 95% of folks. We wouldn’t be here and wouldn’t have brains to enjoy this website if not for meat. Viva la carne!

Jim improved his cardiovascular health and diabetes on a carnivore diet

May 5, 2018

Age: 63
Starting weight: 154 lb

Partial list health issues:

  • CVD-meds: 20mg simvastin, 1/4 aspirin, plavix, atenalol
  • Thyroid, goiter-meds: 1/2 smallest does WP thyroid and 200MCG Selenium 3X/week
  • High fasting glucose: 110 in December and A1C 5.7 April 2017
  • Gum disease
  • IBS from “healthy” high fiber diet
  • Back and shoulder pain
  • Allergies

It seems like when I turned 50 everything started downhill. Up until then (and after) I tried mostly low fat, high fiber diet which included vegetable juicing.

I was 125 pounds in high school and went from about 135 to 185 from 45 years old to 55.

I tried a LCHF diet in 2012 but was scared out of it by my doctors even though my weight went from 184 to 125 in about 6 months.

My reason to go low carb this year was:
1. Gum disease progression: a lot of deep pockets and getting close to losing a back molar.
2. A1C was 5.7 last April and my morning, fasting glucose had been creeping way up to 110

Four month SUCCESSFUL results:

  1. 4 years of gum disease reversed as of check up May 3. No more deep pockets, no bleeding and teeth in great shape. Gum recession will not grow back
  2. April, 2018 A1C was 5.2 from 5.7 last April. Fasting morning glucose at 94 form 110 in December
  3. Had IBS, bleeding anal fissure, internal hemorrhoids and terrible gas. 99% gone. Unreal!!!!!
  4. Shoulder and back pain 90% better. Did 130 push-ups on Monday in 4 sets vs. 20 with a week of shoulder pain last year. Now doing deep knee bends and couldn’t ever thing of that last year because of back pain.
  5. Every morning I would wake up with a runny nose filling several paper towels with mucous. It’s now 90% better and was even better when I did not have dairy but have added some of that back.
  6. Weaned blood pressure meds to nothing and BP normal first time in over 20 years (was normal only with meds last 8). I had 4 stents in 3 arteries in 2010 with 1 artery clear and one 100% blocked (there are 5 major arteries feeding you heart). My chest pain did not go away after stents and cardiologist tried meds (renexa and long-acting nitro) neither worked so I said forget trying.

10 years of chest pain vanished after about a month of this and I thought at first it was my imagination (even though was getting great results on my new/used Concept 2 Rower).

My GP does a carotid artery scan every April and in 2017 he said the blockage had gotten much worse from 2016 and said I need to do something soon.

What was I supposed to do? Was already following all the stupid bullshit they told me to do.

This April scan showed “significant” improvement over last year!!!!! And that was with 8 months of shitty diet and only 3.5 months of carnivore.

My chest pain is gone and I have not felt this good since I was 30!!!!!!

  7. Weight from 154 to 136 pounds

Thanks so much to Doc Baker!

Asiti improved his fitness and cardiovascular health on a carnivore diet

I’ve been zero carb for 6 months and I couldn’t be happier or healthier.

I’ve been a ketogenic lifestyler for several years, however something just always felt ‘off’. Since going only meat and water, everything changed.

My physical and mental performance is the best it’s ever been. I am getting stronger in the gym day in day out, building muscle and maintain a lean physique year round. I have unlimited focus, clarity and improved memory and mood.

ZC helped me recover from adrenal fatigue and several eating disorders. It also cured my chronic constipation which I suffered for several years.

I have had several blood tests done over the last year, and since going ZC my total testosterone went up 50%, free testosterone went up 250% and I got my libido back. My triglycerides are 44mg/dl. And virtually all other blood markers are optimal levels.

Being a health and wellness coach, stumbling upon such a bizarre (against popular belief) and simple way of living really came as a shock. I cannot personally recommend it enough as it has completely changed my life.

Amy improved adrenal health, fitness, mood, mental health on carnivore diet

Left: Amy at 21 years old, 216 pounds; Right: Amy at 43 years old, 120 pounds

Hi!

I’m Amy, I’m 43 years old, married with 4 children (4, 13, 21, and 24). I’m a nutritional therapy practitioner (NTP).

Before I became a nutritionist I was a personal trainer. Food and nutrition has been my passion for many years. However, I grew up on the standard American diet. After the birth of my first baby I fell for the “fat free” scam and subsequently became super depressed and gained tons of weight. At which point I got pregnant with baby number 2 and proceeded to gain an additional 67lbs!

I spent the next 6 or 7 years miserable. Counting calories. Trying to starve then binging on food. Laying in bed every night hating myself for screwing up. Vowing “tomorrow would be different!” Exercising the whole time, mind you! Many thousands of hours spent on the elliptical or treadmill!

Years passed. I thought I was “normal” with my daily headaches (there’s a king size bottle of Tylenol at Costco for a reason, right?!), heartburn, knee pain, depression, irritability, PMS, debilitating cramps, awful skin, breakouts, skin tags (eww), gray hairs starting in my 20’s, frequent colds, the flu and an epic string of strep throat (8 times in 15 months! And yes, antibiotics every single time… I shudder at the thought).

I didn’t lose weight in any miraculous or healthy way initially. I tried Metabolife and it certainly worked. I drank coffee all day and starved myself. This went on for awhile, I did give up the Metabolife thank God but kept on counting calories and fat grams and hours at the gym. At 5’5″ I hovered around 140lbs doing this.

Fast forward a few years, I started doing CrossFit and Paleo. I attended a nutrition seminar held by Robb Wolf and committed to “30 days of Paleo”. That was over 8 years ago. And believe me, the early days were full of many mistakes! Cheat days, sugar free popsicles, nasty chemicals, splenda in my coffee, you name it!

Since then I’ve spent most of my years on a keto/paleo template. I did tinker with higher carb paleo for a year. That was awful. I gained about 10 lbs of solid fat. Didn’t feel any better and my strength did not improve one iota!

I really only tried a carnivore diet out of sheer curiosity! (I thought that Baker guy was nuts! Lol) I already felt “pretty good”, or so I thought… however:

    • I had random gallbladder pain
    • occasional heartburn
    • my hair was falling out!!
    • my strength was stalled. I hadn’t improved any of my lifts in years (I do powerlifting. For fun, not competitively)
    • my mood, while better wasn’t great
    • my joints were a little achy especially if I sat in the same position for a long time. Which I chalked up to normal.
    • I was still fairly lean but not quite as lean as I had been previously. I’d pretty much lost all visible abs. Which I attributed to a reduction in exercise. And age.
    • my cycle was ok, although it took takes to “get going” – start, stop, start, stop.
    • I had adrenal fatigue (low cortisol all day)

I actually love veggies (with loads of fat, of course!) So, I figured I would try the carnivore thing and maybe last a week.

Within 8 days (I think) I got my first pullup EVER. Keep in mind I’ve been training seriously for over 20 years and never gotten a pull up before!

This almost surreal zen feeling came over me… I can’t explain it, but I knew I had no desire to stop! I started losing weight and body fat… my abs came back! At 5’5″ I went from maybe 130lbs to 117-120lbs and 13% body fat.

  • My heartburn, gone
  • My gallbladder pain, gone
  • My hair QUIT FALLING OUT
  • My mood and energy shot through the roof
  • Zero joint pain/stiffness
  • My cycle is perfect! Starts like normal, no cramps or PMS at all!
  • While I have not tested my cortisol levels again, all my symptoms of adrenal fatigue are gone!

Cooking and shopping is SO EASY! I have a family of four and we all eat basically the same.

After over 6 months I continue to see improvements in the gym. I eat primarily beef, pork, chicken. A little bit of cheese and eggs. I generally eat twice a day. Around 2lbs a day on average. I drink alcohol a few times a month (tequila). I don’t cheat at all. I have no desire.

For a nutritionist, this is a huge paradigm shift! But, all you need is an open mind and a willingness to experiment!
