Connor heals from diabetes, joint pain, immune issues on a carnivore diet

I went keto in February 2018, and after learning about Dr. Baker and hearing his story I went primarily carnivore with the help of a close friend who was also experimenting with the diet. When I say primarily carnivore I mean about 90% of my daily caloric intake comes from red meat. I still introduce small doses of carbohydrate due to the fact that I’m a type 1 diabetic and am still experimenting with how low I can go in terms of carbs per day while still keeping my blood sugar high enough. This has involved experimenting with lowering my total daily dose of insulin, and I’m happy to say I’m down for 40 units a day to 15.

Even more impressive, my A1c has gone all the way down to 5.4, prior to this diet it was 7.6. Standard deviation, calculated by my constant glucose monitor, is also down from 50 to 20 mg/dL. In other words my type 1 diabetes is under incredible control, and my sugars have never been as stable as they are now. Furthermore, the rest of my bloodwork has improved as well, and my blood pressure has gone down to normal levels.

In 2010 I blew out my right knee very badly, and blew it out again in 2013. My surgeon said I would never squat with weight again in my life, and as a gym rat this was pretty upsetting. I’m happy to report though that I can now squat heavier than ever, and go running and sprinting in the very same day, and still be able to deadlift without pain the day after. All of my other injuries, including a partially torn rotator cuff and an injury to the quadratus lumborum on my right side now no longer bother me, even with heavy and frequent squats deadlifts and bench presses. Also, my waist size has gone from a 36 to a 32, while at the same time gaining six pounds and getting stronger (I’m a skinny guy).

I also haven’t been sick since starting this diet… which is a big deal for me, a guy who has experienced sinus infections so bad that I was frequently on antibiotics 4-6 times a year.

Thanks, Dr. Baker. Meat Heals.

Martin lost anxiety, paranoia, fatigue, rhinitis on carnivore diet

After years of experimentation with keto and paleo diets, always allowing cheat days, I took the plunge into carnivory and have not looked back. All I eat is beef and butter.

Anxiety, paranoia, fatigue and allergic rhinitis all vanished in a matter of weeks. My lifting regimen is energizing instead of exhausting, and my body is strong in ways I thought were impossible for me.

Daniel improved sleep, energy, headaches, chronic injuries on carnivore diet

I had eaten the Standard American Diet for most of my life but with a heavy emphasis on "healthy" grains and "low fat" everything.  As I went through college as a young adult I found my health beginning to decline.  My waist circumference went over 40 inches, my BMI went over 35 and I was so exhausted all the time that I fell asleep at the wheel while driving a number of times. Through nothing more than sheer luck I didn't kill myself or anyone else on the road but as a man in his early 20s, keeping one's eyes open at 5:00pm shouldn't be a problem!

I realized I had to do something so for several years I followed the traditional advice of low fat, lots of healthy grains, and elimination of meat products.  As I was not making a lot of money, going vegetarian was an easy way to accomplish this.

Not only did I fail to lose any weight on a vegetarian diet, I was constantly hungry and miserable.  I stopped sleeping well at night and was falling asleep in class and even at work.  My free testosterone was measured at 202, about 1/3 where it should have been at my age.  I had no sex drive, constant aches in every joint of my body, frequent nosebleeds, headaches, and a constant malaise that would probably have been diagnosed as clinical depression if I had access to medical care at the time.

After hearing some success stories on the internet with low carbohydrate diets I eventually decided to try it and the change was almost immediate.  Within a month I had lost around 10 pounds, I no longer felt groggy in the afternoon, and I felt full of life for the first time in years.  After college I made it a lifestyle and began to incorporate more and more meat while displacing grains, roots, fruits, and yes even lots of vegetables.

My blood triglycerides and blood pressure went to optimal levels.  My HDL cholesterol improved and my LDL (though never elevated before) stayed in a healthy range.  I had so much energy that I began working out religiously, taking a great joy in barbell training and progressing rapidly in my physical strength while seeing my body get leaner and stronger.  I was no longer hungry all day, my joint pain was gone, and I finally felt as if my body was being used and nourished the way it had evolved to be.  The assumed issues of constipation, upset stomach, cramping, vitamin deficiency, weight gain, hypertension and so forth that we have been told would be the result of eating a lot of meat have proven to be completely false in my opinion.  In fact, I used to be victim to bouts of upset stomach and diarrhea multiple times per week but now that is a thing of the past.

I have subsequently sustained injuries where surgery was recommended.  I had a herniated disc and a SLAP tear (labrum tear) in my right shoulder.  Both of these resolved quickly while eating a diet of 90+ percent meat.
Meat healed me.  Meat gave me a quality of life that I never dreamed of.

The dietary recommendations of eating a diet of primarily grain and vegetables made me sick and are based on very shaky science. I implore anybody with influence over dietary recommendations for any population to re-examine the role of meat in a healthy diet and keep in mind that there are a huge number of confounding factors with meat consumption.

Meat consumers tend to eat a lot of their meat between two pieces of bread with a bag of chips and a large sugary cola.  They have a tendency to ignore all health recommendations in general and thus tend to smoke more, drink more, and drive without their seatbelt.

Now I enjoy a full life and tell others about how I have improved virtually every aspect of my life by eating lots of meat and little else.  I have seen those close to me heal their bodies and reclaim a quality of life they thought was behind them.

Andrew lost weight and improved his respiratory issues on a carnivore diet

Like so many others here I watched Dr. Shawn Baker on the Joe Rogan Podcast. After two months on this woe have lost 8kg of fat, gained a little muscle, but gained a lot more strength. My asthma and hay fever issues are almost totally gone, and I’m feeling great.

The ability to get away from the old cravings/crash cycle of my former woe to a now steady level of energy for the whole day is so calming.

Filip improved back and joint pain on a carnivore diet

These are my health improvements after 1 year of cutting out all plants and dairy from my diet:

  1. Healed knee: I had a bike accident as a kid and have always felt a slight pain in my knee since then. My knee is now completely healed. The healing process took 6 month and my body performed something akin to surgery on it self: my knee got really swollen during the healing process and I felt something (which I believe was a tiny piece of gravel left from the bike accident) was being pulled out of my knee.
  2. No more back pain: I would wake up every morning with cramp in my back muscles. it’s all gone now.
  3. No more stiff muscles: most of my muscles used to be really stiff.
  4. Better bowel movements, no more diarrhea, no more bloody stool.
  5. Better digestion.
  6. No more night sweats. I would occasionally wake up during the night and my pillow would be soaked in sweat. No more.
  7. Not tired when I wake up in the morning. I’ve become a morning person.
  8. Not tired after eating.
  9. Better eyesight: everything is much sharper and colors are really vivid. I used to have to squint on sunny days before. Not anymore.
  10. Ocular migraine is gone: I think this is due to quitting coffee.
  11. Cleansed sinuses: my sinuses always used to be clogged up. now they have been cleansed. I have felt my pulse in my sinuses for the last 12 months.
  12. Regained sense of smell: directly after starting zero carb I noticed that I could smell the perfume of people on the streets. This had never happened before.
  13. No more anxiety: I used to get stressed out over stupid things. Now I’m the calmest I’ve ever been. I think this is due to quitting coffee.
  14. Better memory.
  15. Better cognitive functions.
  16. Constantly high energy levels.
  17. Better sleep and better dreams. I have not had a nightmare since I started with this diet.
  18. No more dry skin.
  19. No physical fatigue: I feel stronger than I’ve ever felt before.
  20. No winter cold: this is the first year in +10 years that I haven’t had a cold.
  21. No more nosebleed: I used to get nosebleeds on a regular basis. It’s all gone now.
  22. Happier: I’ve never felt this happy in my life before. Now I get sudden bursts of euphoria from time to time. 🙂
  23. Better fine motor skills: playing the piano has never been this easy.
  24. No more red hands: my hands used to occasionally turn red. Not anymore.
  25. No more white fingers (Raynaud syndrome): I think this is due to quitting coffee.
  26. No cravings for food: I used to get cravings for e.g. ice cream and chocolate. Now I only feel hunger.
  27. No more pain between toes (Morton’s neuroma).
  28. Gaining weight: I’ve always been tall and skinny and has never been able to gain either muscle mass or body fat. Now I’m starting to gain weight as my body is absorbing the food I eat.
  29. Quick recovery after physical exercise. I play squash, do TRX, and ride racing bike and recovery has never been this quick. Hardly any muscle soreness.
  30. More stuff has happened that I cannot put into words: I just know that my body feels better and that something has healed that I don’t know what it is. I just feel that I have increased my life expectancy by many years.

All of this happened just because I stopped eating plants and dairy! Better yet, I haven’t paid a penny for it and haven’t been to an MD 🙂 The Internet has been my only resource.

That being said, the healing process was quite intense. I certainly got the keto flu and was many time questioning if I was doing the right thing. I want to thank everyone who has gone through this process and has shared their stories on the Internet. Without having access to all these personal stories I don’t think I would have continued all the way through. Heck, I wouldn’t have come across this diet to start with if it wasn’t for the Internet! This is why I want to share my experience with everyone.
