Food addiction & cravings

Tiffany overcame decades of food addiction on a carnivore diet

I lost 130 lbs with a combination of intermittent fasting and low carb paleo eating. In January 2020 when I began experimenting with a carnivore diet, my goals were primarily for body recomposition as I needed to tighten loose skin and build muscle after going from 260 down to 130 lbs. (I am 5’8”)

I have had many more NSVs than that now that I have been exclusively carnivore for the last several months.

-I wake before my alarm
– I have sustained energy throughout the day
– I’m now training for a marathon because my legs want to move
– I’m almost never hungry and actually remind myself to eat
– I sleep more soundly and need less sleep overall
– I’m more productive because my thinking is sharp and clear
– Body recomposition: I’ve lost 1” from my rib cage, 2” from my hips, and 3 1/2” from my waist
– Anxiety is gone
– Age spots are fading
– The most important NSV of all, sticking to a carnivore diet helped me overcome decades of sugar addiction and carb binges.

Miscellaneous info – Shawn Baker’s carnivore book was my gateway to starting, and I joined meat rx for the 30 day trial January 2020. My full length before/after is 2015 to March 2020. The up close before/after is 2011 to 2020. The most recent before/after shows the difference when I made my most recent tweaks (increase fat/protein ratio and eliminate salt) The difference is from Thanksgiving day to December 18.

Colin improved his digestion on a carnivore diet

Colin was convinced that meat was terrible for you and it was going to destroy the earth.  So he decided to be a vegan.  He developed digestive issues and felt bloated.

Jeff is now in control of his sugar cravings on a Carnivore diet

Jeff is a busy division 1 basketball referee who grew up in Illinois.  He grew up eating the standard American diet which consisted mostly of junk food, Doritos, fries, cakes….not only did he eat these things, he ate large volumes of them at a time and didn’t even realize it wasn’t good for him.  His weight climbed to 260 lbs.

Jeff started the keto diet and spent his time chasing ketones until he heard about the carnivore diet on the Joe Rogan post cast with Dr. Shawn Baker (link below) and changed the way he eats.

Jeff lost weight, felt stronger and is in control of his sugar and carbohydrate cravings after making the switch.  He felt so amazing that he became a Certified Carnivore Coach so that he can help others make an educated decision on their health.

Holly healed her Plantar Fasciitis on a carnivore diet

Holly was healthy as a child and didn’t notice any health issues until she was 16 years old and developed a dairy intolerance.  Nine years later Holly had her first of four babies in the span of two years and three months.  After so much in a short time she started to notice her mood change and would be quick to anger and her body was becoming sore and tired.

Holly decided to try several diets including the keto diet.  All of the diets worked for weight loss but never healed her pain and discomfort.

Holly decided to try the carnivore diet for eight weeks.  During that time, she healed her aches and pains, headaches, thinning hair, mood and changed her relationship with food.  She decided to say with the carnivore way of eating.

Erin ditched the plants and eliminated her eczema

Erin suffered from endometriosis, celiac disease and hyperglycaemia. She was a carbohydrate addict often only wanting to eat the bread at a restaurant instead of the meal she ordered.

In 2010 she had her son.  He started to suffer from eczema due to food allergies her breast milk.  Erin was told she could try to eliminate foods like wheat and soy, but that was often too restrictive for people and that she could just feed her son formula.  Erin decided to eliminate the foods and also searched for answers to what she thought were unrelated symptoms in herself like chronic urinary tract infections.

She first found paleo and then the autoimmune protocol.  She had improvements with both, but the symptoms never completely went away.

Erin learned of the carnivore diet and decided to slowly transition onto it.  After four months of ditching the plants everything fell into place.  Her symptoms cleared up.

Cassie healed from plantar fasciitis, edema, back pain on a carnivore diet

Cassie lost 100 pounds lost in 9 months on Carnivore!

I’m never going back. I was sick, in pain, and tired. I don’t ever want to be that person again.

Six years ago (at age 45) I started Paleo because I was 376 pounds, walking with a cane, taking naps every day, and on allergy medicine because of constant allergy attacks. I had candida overgrowth which was causing me issues and when I googled to find a resolution it led me to Paleo.  I did Paleo for 2 ½ years and lost 170 pounds. It healed most of my problems but I eventually stalled and then started to introduce Paleo treats which fueled my carb addiction (which had never gone away). Eventually I started eating processed foods, sugar, and corn again. I stayed gluten-free due to my IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) / leaky gut.

In late 2019, my candida overgrowth had returned with a vengeance and when I googled again for a resolution, I found Carnivore.  I had heard of the zero-carbers when I was Paleo but thought it was radical so I never tried it.  This time there was a lot more information on zero-carb and Carnivore.  I read up on it, watched videos, and decided to give it a try.  I decided I would do it for a few weeks in November 2019 but that I would go off of it while I was traveling for work and enjoying Thanksgiving. I did the same in December.  Each time I had the carnivore flu.

When January 3, 2020 arrived (age 50), I started again from my highest weight in the past 5 years of 294 pounds. I told my husband that I was doing “zero-carb keto” for a while. I didn’t admit to being Carnivore until a month later.  I had the carnivore flu (again), bathroom issues, and fatigue.  I knew now what to expect and I was learning a lot of information from Facebook.  When I joined MeatRx, I attended as many meetings as I could to learn from everyone on the new platform.  The meeting leaders were great and had all been on carnivore for 6 months, 1 year, or even longer. It was also great to be on the same path as other new people starting in January.

In the beginning I ate a lot of chaffles (egg and cheese in a waffle iron), bbq (unsauced), and bacon.  I always carried bacon with me including when I traveled twice in January for work. I had a burst of energy at week 3, but then was fatigued for a few more weeks. I had meat aversion around week 4, but I did short fasts until my appetite came back.  By week 6 my carb cravings were gone.  Sweet treats still smell good to me, but I have absolutely no desire to have one.  I never want to go back to feeling so sick, dazed, and confused.

By the third month I felt fully dedicated–nothing could dissuade me from staying on Carnivore for life. I’m a total convert. My work capacity has increased dramatically. I feel like my brain was operating at 30% compared to 100% now. I have so much energy I overdid it with construction projects at our new home and now I’m having some physical therapy for shoulder / rotator cuff tendonitis.  I haven’t truly exercised but I do get out 2-3 times a month for a 2-mile run/walk when the air quality in California allows.

Two questions I get asked frequently after losing 100 pounds in exactly 9 months. Do I fast? I did a bit of fasting the first 6 months but since I was doing so many projects on the house I needed the food for fuel. Now that I am healing my shoulder and not taking vacation I am more sedentary. I generally fast now either 1, 2, or 3 days a week. It just depends on how hungry I am.  The other question is about excess skin.  I do have it which is one reason I fast (for the autophagy) but I fully expect to have some skin removal surgery on my arms, stomach, and thighs.  You can’t lose almost 200 pounds in 6 years (half my body weight!!!) without needing some help through body contouring.

I do not have insulin resistance or thyroid issues. I think this is why I can lose weight easily at age 50/51. I’ve lost 100+ pounds three other times in my life (WW, Exercise, Paleo). Another reason I do well is that I don’t deviate from plan. I know I’m a true carb addict so I must completely abstain. I don’t ever want to lose this. Even if I never lost another pound I wouldn’t care. I’ve gotten more of my life back in less than 10 months then I ever anticipated.  I still attend MeatRx meetings when my schedule allows so if you see me in the evening social meetings or at the carb addiction meetings (which I lead), please say hello. See you on the other side!!!

Food: I eat beef, bacon, pork, chicken wings, duck, black coffee. Gave up eggs (even egg yolks caused me nausea) and now only have a small amount of cheese. Dairy (heavy cream, soft cheeses) do slow my weight loss / cause weight gain.

Exercise: I run/walk a few times a month about 2 miles each time

Healed: Carb cravings, brain fog, plantar fasciitis, heel spur pain, severe candida overgrowth, edema, back pain (which required me to take anti-inflammatories every night and to sleep sitting up)

John gained mental clarity, energy and focus on a carnivore diet

First picture was in May – I was a “SAD” diet eater and heavy drinker.  After two 6 week periods of attempts to control and count calories, and then counting calories and periodic fasting (and losing zero weight), I decided to go all-in on Carnivore.  These are pictures I took monthly, from May 17th (day 0) to August 17th 2020.

I’m currently 37 years old, but In my mid 20’s I was extremely fit and did crossfit 5 or 6 days a week, ate a strict paleo diet, and was overall really “heathy”, but my lifestyle and health declined as I got older (injuries and other hobbies came into play, and I started to work out less).   My relatively healthy lifestyle took a nosedive in the summer of 2019 when my wife and I had our baby boy – Fitness took a back seat, and as laziness set in, and my diet turned into eating pizza, chicken tenders, and any other “junk” i could make while dealing with all the things new parents deal with, I also started to get into the craft beer scene, and started drinking IPA’s like they were going out of style – and the mimosa-marathon Sundays just got longer and longer…The excuses are plentiful, but the reality is, it was all my fault, I’d let myself go.  I ate like shit and drank too much, and I knew I had to make a change.  In a period of around 6 months I had gone from a 34″ waist to my recently purchased 38″ jeans barely fitting.  My belts were almost out of holes…not good!

Rewinding a bit:  January 2020, I had this lofty goal of losing weight, stopping drinking, etc.  The normal new years resolution stuff.  I watched the vegan doc “Game Changer”, and thought that a lot of what they showed the viewers was pretty compelling.  It definitely made me consider the extreme vegan route – not for any moral reasons, but just because I wanted to lose weight and turn things around as far as how I felt.  BUT, I compared the food on a vegan diet to how successful I had been losing weight eating a paleo diet, and decided I just really couldn’t see myself giving up food that I knew worked for me in the past.  The one thing that always bothered me with paleo, however, was that I was constantly crapping my brains out.  Salads gave me major stomach issues, and lean meat never made me feel really full.  So even on strict paleo, I was “healthy” looking, I wasn’t fat,  but I never felt that good.  I remember having ridiculous weekly cheat meals where I’d crush two pizzas by myself.  Again, it’s like the diet should work, but it never left me feeling as good as I looked.  So Feb 2020, I started to move in the direction of eating paleo, but I was still drinking beers, having “cheat meals” all weekend, and sometimes during the week.  I couldn’t – at that point – really control my drinking…it had become a habit.  I’d drink because that’s what I did when I got home from work.  I knew I was in trouble.

In March of 2020, I was fortunate enough to stumble on the Joe Rogan / Dr. Shawn Baker interview on youtube…that was the beginning of my “game changer”.

The truth is, over the next several weeks,  I did a deep dive into the topic.  I found the meatRx website, found Ken Berry, found Saladino, started reading studies, started looking into my family history of medical problems, learned what an autoimmune disease really is, and started to learn all the science behind diet, and why it mattered.  Then,  May 17th 2020.  I was drunk off champagne sitting on my deck, taking pictures with my son, and saw how fat I had become.  I was embarrassed, I was depressed, I’d let myself go, it was time to change.  I went strict carnivore on May 18th, 2020.

This carnivore diet, from about the second week forward, has made me feel better, mentally sharper, more focused, and more energetic.  I don’t have cravings for any junk food, I don’t drink anymore – and don’t have any cravings for alcohol.   I work out almost every day – and remain injury free.  It’s hard to put into words exactly how good I feel, all I can say is that I feel bad for people who don’t eat carnivore – they have no idea what they’re missing!  This website, Dr. Baker’s podcasts, and the other info available from this community has opened up the door to learning so much more about health and wellness, that I’m confident now that I can say this diet is without a doubt the 3rd best thing to happen to me in the last 20 years (my beautiful bride and baby boy are  #1 and 2).

I would guess in 90 days I’m down at least 40 pounds, but honestly, weight loss is a great side effect that goes along with just how damn good it feels to be on this diet.  I eat mostly grocery store beef, less than 10% grass fed (I think grain fed just tastes better…!).   I add in organ meat on occasion, but find desiccated organ capsules from Amazon are more palatable for me.  I get the “carnivore crack” from a local grocery store, I make my own “carnivore” mayo, I eat some cheese, I drink coffee with heavy cream, and I eat the thunder out of some red meat – and the fattier the cuts the better.  I feel satiated all the time, I feel “good” all the time, I don’t get headaches, I don’t get sick, I don’t get tired.  I sleep like a baby, I wake up ready to kick-ass, and I honestly feel like I’m reverse aging.

I’m a  huge advocate of this diet, in my social circle.  I’ve started to educate my friends and family about the benefits of Carnivore / Keto, I’ve shared information with my mom and sister who both are suffering from autoimmune diseases (hoping they’ll see the light), and I’m happy to be a part of the “Carnivore” family here on meatRX.  The stories on the site definitely played a part in me trying this, and I’m happy to now share my success story as well.

I highly recommend this diet to anyone who needs to make a big change in their life – It might be the 3rd best thing to happen to you too.  3 months has totally changed my outlook on the next 20 years of my life. If you stick with the program, I promise after 90 days you won’t be disappointed.

Thanks Dr. Baker – and team – for what you’re doing.  Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions or want more info.

My only regret is I didn’t get pre-carnivore blood tests, I’m sure you all could have used that (oops!)

Regards,

J
