Jeff got jacked on a fasting carnivore lifestyle

Hi, my name is Jeff. I am 60 years old. I want to tell you what the carnivore diet did for me, and how it got me jacked.

 

A history of fitness

As a kid I looked at bodybuilders of the day as heroes
I always wanted to be like that
I was into sports and worked out
I then got in the fitness industry and between 1981 to 2001 – i owned, operated, managed health clubs, fitness centers. I trained people, i gave seminars on fitness, exercise and nutrition… i was involved in the manufacturing, distribution, marketing and sales of Nutritional supplements, and educated people on what and how to use supplementation.

Believing the wrong thing

I was taught, believed, and practiced the protocol of eating 6-7x per day (every 2.5 to 3 hours to maintain an anabolic state and a positive nitrogen balance, and to avoid going catabolic)… consisting of 50%+ Carbs, 50% Protein (as lean and fat free as possible) and as low of Fats as possible… i believed in 1.0 to 1.5 g of Protein per Pound of Body-weight per day, and a minimum of 1.0 g of Carbs per Pound of Body-weight per day… Everything that I knew, practiced and taught others was WRONG

 

Trying so hard

I did not know that I didn’t know… I worked out hard, I ate correctly, I was dedicated, motivated, and disciplined… BUT I wasn’t ever getting the RESULTS that I wanted, no matter how hard I tried

I ate less
I exercised more
Nothing worked

I was big, I was strong, BUT, I didn’t look like I wanted to look…

Then in May 2017… i saw a photo of one of my best friend’s – Sam, who I had not seen for 3-4 years… i was shocked, astounded, awestruck, speechless… i knew Sam for over 30 years… in that photo… he looked like a Greek God… i had to know WTF … i contacted him immediately…

 

Getting over my own beliefs

It took him from the beginning of May 2017 to the 3rd week of June 2017 to convince me to try what he was telling me to do…

It was contradictory and opposite to everything that I knew and had been told, and taught me entire life…

I finally surrendered… only because I knew Sam… and I saw what ge had done… he obviously knew something that i didn’t know…

I started my first day on June 26, 2017… the day I took my first “Before” photo…

Within 2 weeks I felt, and saw changes that I had not experienced before with any diet i had ever tried… i kept at it, and continued to research and investigate everything and to educate myself more…

I have never stopped or looked back…

Intermittent Fasting

When I started off, I was only doing the Intermittent Fasting, as Sam had convinced me to do, I was not including the ketogenic/ low carb diet at this point

I was doing a 16/8 IF Schedule – 16 Hours Fasting Period and an 8-Hour Feeding Period and, within the first 2 weeks, I felt, and, saw changes that I had not experienced before on other “diets” that I had tried – within the first 2 weeks, I knew that something was “happening” !!

I did NOT change my foods (eating, my diet) – I just continued to eat the same things that I had been eating (including carbs), but, now, I was eating everything during the 8-hour Feeding Period – I was doing 4 meals a day (eating a meal every 2.5 hours +/-)

Narrowing the window

Then, Sam asked me how I felt, and, how I was doing – and, when I told him that I felt and was doing great – he had me switch the IF schedule from 16/8 to an 18/6 schedule... within 3-4 days, the immediate problem that I was experiencing was trying to eat all 4 of my meals within the 6 hour Feeding window – it was almost impossible – too much food – so, I adjusted and changed to 3 meals – one meal every 2 hours

So, I was still doing high carbs, high protein, low fat – because at this point, I did not have all of the information, and, I did not know any better

the low carb discussion didn’t enter the picture until about month 2 – and, then, from month 2 through about month 4-5, my carb intake went from over 200+g per day, down to 150g per day, to 100g per day, to 50g per day, eventually down to about 35g per day, a level that I then stayed at for several months, as I continued to educate myself on everything, and, to tweak and adjust other facets of my foods/ diet – and, although I had adjusted the Carbs down to a low carb intake – I was still doing the balance of my foods as high protein, and, moderate fats (which I still believed to be necessary – keeping my protein high for muscle building and maintenance, and, low fats, so that I didn’t get fat)

 

Feeding window on a crack

Over time – during the first 6 months (end of June when I started) – I went from the initial 16/8, then to 18/6, then to 19/5, and, eventually, by October 2017, I was on an IF 20/4 schedule – and, as noted, I adjusted my Carbs from over 200g/day, down to 35g/day… but, I was still doing 3 meals/ day during the 4-hour Feeding Period – and, I stayed on this Schedule from Oct 2017, up through May-June 2018 – ¬†– during which time I brought my Carbs down to 20 g per day – and, this schedule lasted from about June, 2018 up through Oct 2018 – at which time I kept the same foods, during 3 meals, but, adjusted the IF Schedule again from 20/4 to 22/2 (eating the 3 meals one every hour) and, I then stayed on this schedule (22/2), with minor adjustments along the way in the foods – but, still, high proteins, moderate fats, and low carbs – from October 2018, up through February, 2019 – one of the adjustments that I made during this period is to change from 3 large/ regular sized meals to 2 regular meals (the first meal of the day, and, the last meal of the day, with just a snack (like peanut butter, sugar free jello, almonds, or pork rinds, string cheese, or similar) in between the 2 meals

Somehow, not by any thought or planning, one day, during February, I couldn’t eat the 2nd meal, I was just full, and, not hungry – so, I had just eaten the first regular meal, and, the snack, and that was it… then, this feeling, of not wanting, or needing the last meal, continued – and, all of a sudden, not by choice, or planning, my IF Schedule went from 22/2 to 23/1 and, I was eating everything within 1 hour everyday – which is what I continue to do up to now

 

Going keto

In March 2019, during additional, extensive research – I made a decision to adjust my Macros to a true ketogenic formula plan – 75% Fats, 20% Protein, and, under 5% Carbs (I was actually under 2% Carbs by this point) – within 2 weeks I was seeing, and, feeling immediate differences and great results – I truly believe that having too much protein (which I thought was absolutely necessary as an active bodybuilder for not only adding new muscle, but, to maintain the hard earned muscle that I had) – but, I was wrong – now, looking back, I truly believe thgat the Protein, the extra protein, was an obstacle, and, holding me back from further gains – especially the Whey Protein Powder supplement shake that I was doing as one of my meals every day (which turns out to be the worst form of protein to ingest because of the immediate insulin spikes it causes) – the leaner the proteins, the proteins absent sufficient fat, the quicker it is digested, and, the more insulin that is produced in conjunction with the protein consumption.

 

finally OMAD

So, not by planning, not by conscious choice – I somehow ended up on an IF Schedule of 23/1 – which, by operational definition, is the same as, or, very similar, and, close enough to the OMAD (“One Meal A Day) diet that people talk about – because although during my 1-hour Feeding Period I am eating multiple times (2 regular meals, and, a snack in between) – I am basically consuming all of my foods non-stop during that 1 hour period.

 

My current WOE

my current Macros are approx. Calories (2,200 to 2,400) / Proteins (0.4 to 0.5 g per pound (so 90-100g/day)) 20% of my diet) / Carbs (under 10g/day) under 2% of my diet)), and / Fats (upwards of 200g/day) over 75% of my diet)) – all consumed during my 1-hour Feeding Period – and, then, for the next 23 hours – the Fasting Period, I do not eat anything of any kind whatsoever.

 

I feel great, I feel healthy – I am never hungry, I have lots of energy, and lots of mental focus.

Experimenting

Since March 29 (the date of my last writing above) – I have had various “adjustments in both my Nutritional Protocol and my Exercise Protocol
and, I always do extensive research and self-experimentation to see what works, and, ultimately what works best for me, and my goals…
 

Steak and eggs protocol

On May 19, 2020, I started the “Steak & Eggs” (Carnivore) Protocol
as of tonight – I am on Day 13 – and feel fantastic
Never Hungry, No Cravings
 
I only eat Beef (fatty steak cuts – like Rib-eye or Chuck Eye Steak), and Eggs, and Butter – nothing else
 
My Protocol since approx Feb-Mar 2019 has been OMAD РIntermittent Fasting 23/1 (actually 23.5/0.5) 
 
up until this May 19 – my Macros were – Fats (80-83%), Protein (17-20%), and Carbs (under 1%) – so switching to the Carnivore (Steak & Eggs) was simple and easy (My Proteins have always been “Fatty Proteins”, nothing “Lean”)
 
My Macros now are – Fats (70-73%), Protein (27-30%), and Carbs (0%)
 
My OMAD Meal consists of only the following…
Steak (1 pound)
Eggs (6 whole)
Butter (4-5 tbsp)

Cal lost weight and improved his fitness on a fasting lifestyle

Lost 40 lbs on Atkins about 18 years ago. Got into bike racing at about 178 lbs. Wt creep occurred to about 206. Read Fung’s book 2weeks ago. Skipped breakfast all last week and commuted to work by bike. Lost 6 lbs in one week. Still more to go but encouraging. Also Dr. Baker, I did time at Kirtland AFB. Thanks, Cal

¬† First of all I would like to thank you for being such a big proponent of local ranchers and in particular regenerative ranchers.¬† I fall into the latter category¬†as a rancher at Forage Creek Ranch.¬† We are a part of the database of ranches listed on MeatRx and truly appreciate your hospitality in letting us be a part of your movement.¬† I would also like to tell you that we take every opportunity possible to tell people how we know what you are doing is genuine.¬† I know this is true because¬†you don’t charge ranchers to be a part of your website, or have a subscription or ask us for anything.¬† You truly believe that this is the best way to live and for that we are truly grateful.
 
¬† Secondly, I would like to share a part of my journey.¬† I have been overweight my entire life.¬† As I have gotten older¬† (currently 41) I have become more and more stiff, lethargic, moody, unhealthy, etc, etc.¬† When you are a rancher, or any other busy job, you wake up at 5 am and grab a hot beverage and a sweet something and out the door you go only to need something else by 8am because you are now experiencing a crash in blood sugar.¬† You repeat this process every few hours until 11 pm¬† or so when you finally hit the pillow only to wake up in 5 or 6 hours to do it all again.¬† We grew our own healthy¬†proteins, but also consumed grains, sugars, etc and even with all the work could never move the needle much on the weight loss front.¬† After being enlightened by you on the fasting window and the benefits of carnivore diet my wife and I resigned that we would live a new way.¬† We grow our own beef, lamb, chicken and eggs.¬† We had decided to consume pretty much exclusively our own meat and mostly eat only once per day.¬† We usually treat ourselves on the busy weekends and have 2 meals.¬† Our “workouts” aren’t as refined or conventional as some peoples.¬† We move animals daily, pack electric fence, haul water buckets, scoop chicken feed, hand mow ditches, farmer carries with feed buckets incorporating squats, etc.¬† It’s a far cry from the monumental high box squats you do, but we are definitely¬†making progress.¬† I know people have their own opinions on whether grass-fed meats are better than grain fed and all I know is that I feel amazing and have lost 110 pounds and my wife has lost over 50 pounds in 5 months and we have more energy and mental clarity than ever before.¬† I no longer have high blood pressure, pre diabetic symptoms, stiffness or fogginess.¬† I am by no means “In Shape” or “healthy” or “fit” or any of those things, but I believe I am well on my way to an exponentially¬†better and healthier me.¬†

Sean improved fitness, cannabis addiction, and heart burn on carnivore diet

Im 23 and Ive been doing carnivore coming up on 3 months now.

The carnivore diet has changed my life, I suffered with depression and anxiety that caused me to quit multiple jobs, and now they are completely gone.

I had a cannabis addiction that seems to have faded away.

Im effortlessly loosing all my fat, and my workouts have been 100x better in terms of performance and recovery.

I learned that my hayfever allergies are mainly triggered by gluten and dairy, symptoms have reduced so much I no longer have to take antihistamines every day.

2ND photo: 3.5 years vegan, before my anal fistula burst and sent me to hospital. A long journey past 5 years regaining control of my health. My lowest weight being vegan 60.1kg, my weight now, 67kg.
 
The amount of beef, steaks, eggs, salmon and animal fats I’ve been consuming recently have been through the roof. The results? Nothing but positive, increase in energy, muscle growth, strength, power, endurance, better sleep, faster recovery time than I’ve ever had, mentally clear and focused, excellent digestion, restored collagen levels, the list goes on. Plant based, vegetarianism and veganism may work for some (temporarily at least), but there is no disputing that animal sources are the most nutrient dense, bioavailable, most complete types of foods we can consume as humans packed with everything we need not only to survive, but thrive at optimal levels. 
 
Almost 100% recovered to begin intensely training. With this isolation lock down I’m eating, training+sleeping. If anyone has a fitness challenge let me know, feeling strong+ready to become a beast, surpass all previous fitness levels+push myself beyond my previous limits as a vegan. So thankful to this Carnivore lifestyle. Please ensure you take control of your own health, listen to your body+adapt accordingly! ” Health update of what caused me excessive pain, bloating, cramps, fatigue, malnourishment, ibs, digestive and gut issues, hemorrhoids, excessive shitting 5-10 times a day, eventually leading to an anal fistula… I strongly believe it was the heavily plant based foods I was consuming during my time of being VEGAN for 3.5 years. The last 2 years I started to quite veganism, and looked towards animal products to help heal me as nothing else was working, no matter how much I tried, hospitals and GPS, doctors advice, nutritionists, health practitioners etc. So it’s taken 1 year and almost 6 months to finally have surgery, FINALLY it is done and in the recovery stage.
 
Vegans may say I “did it wrong” but upon researching the many DANGERS of toxins and defense mechanisms in plants, and understanding the importance of animal sources for optimal nutrition and health. The past 3-4 months I have been primarily Carnivore based which has been removing all of my issues apart from some bowel pain and pressure later (due to the anal fistula) whenever I try to eat most plants or anything with fibre. I have seen nothing but POSITIVE results eating only beef, steak, salmon, eggs, fatty cuts of meat, butter, minimal dairy, some honey,  avoiding as much as possible plants, no veggies (occasional avocado’s), no fruits, no juices, no grains (sometimes white basmati rice as they have no anti nutrients), no lugumes, no beans, no lentils, NO PLANTS, only minimal, iodised or pink himalayan sea salt and bit of pepper for seasonings. My body is healing rapidly, I’ve had my surgery finally today, recovery estimate 1-2 months for total healing. Once that is finished I will attempt to incorporate a few more plants to taste as desired, but having been through hell as a result of being vegan, I will stay primarily Carnivore based as this so far as I have seen and researched is without question the most optimal, healthy, beneficial way to eat for us as humans. Animal sources contain large bioavailable forms of nutrients, easily digestible, packed essential proteins + fats for us to live. EAT YOUR MEAT you don’t want to suffer, NEVER feel guilty eating animals + taking control of your health!! ūü•©”

Krissy eliminated chronic pain on carnivore diet

Hi I’m Krissy. Let me give you a little bit of background first: I always had an interest in health from the time I was young when I worked as a lifeguard, swam, and was very active. I originally wanted to become a doctor to help others with their health so my first degree was in Biology.¬†

 

Starting my own private practice

 

I discovered the importance of nutrition for health in my last year of my biology degree and took a nutrition course. I fell in love with nutrition science and physiology and decided to go back to school to study nutrition. I got my Bachelors of Science in Applied Human Nutrition and became registered as a Dietitian in 2009. I was also a certified personal trainer and started my own private practice/private training studio after this where I worked with clients looking for fat loss and building muscle, as well as fitness athletes.  

 

Normal diet not working

 

I was always considered healthy, fit, and active. I followed the recommended “balanced diet” with lots of variety and the common nutritious foods but had to make modifications due to having IBS such as cutting out dairy and gluten. I was very conscious of making healthy choices based on the nutrition guidelines I learned in school.¬†

 

We watched "Vegucated" and "Earthlings" and like many others I was terrified into believing animal products were bad for long-term health.

 

Going vegan with my husband

 

My husband Dwayne and I love learning about health so one day he started watching the documentary ‚ÄúForks Over Knives” and decided he wanted to give a plant-based diet a try. I was not convinced at first because a plant-based diet was not a common practice when I studied nutrition and I wanted to be objective. Then we watched “Vegucated” and “Earthlings” and like many others I was terrified into believing animal products were bad for long-term health. I did some research at that time based on the resources provided in these documentaries and decided to join my husband. I didn’t realize at the time how one sided this research was however. I took a course in plant-based nutrition and was determined to prove it was possible to thrive on a vegan diet.¬†

 

The health decline

 

I felt great in my first year as a vegan. We now know this as the “vegan honeymoon phase”. Maybe it’s because¬†I thought I was doing the best thing for my health, the environment and the animals. But it was after my first year that my health started to decline.¬†

 

Issues on the vegan diet

 

I discovered I had low iron and vitamin D. I also developed chronic fatigue and chronic pain, was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis started to get skin issues and eczema patches for the first time in my life, my hormones were out of whack¬†which was affecting my mood and cycles, my digestion was awful even though I wasn’t consuming gluten and I soaked everything, and I developed anxiety and mild depression. I also slowly started to gain weight when I had never struggled with my weight in the past.¬†

 

 

The wrong solution

 

I started to see a naturopath who prescribed me natural supplements in addition to the iron and vitamin D I was now taking. I also took B12, a multivitamin, and plant-based omega-3 oil all while following a balanced whole foods plant-based diet. Of course all of the vegans tell me “I didn’t do it right” but if anyone researched hard enough on how to, it was me! After-all I was determined to make it work because I was also coaching vegan clients and made a whole business around plant-based diets and challenges. I was known as an expert in the industry and had a big social media following so of course I wanted to make this work.¬†

 

Trying all kinds of approaches

 

I didn’t eat processed vegan foods or junk. I ate a lot of avocados, chickpeas, lentils, vegetables, low sugar fruits, nuts and seeds, gluten-free whole grains, coconut oil, nutritional yeast, and drank only water and tea. I did not restrict calories and I prepared all of my meals at home.¬†I also tried a variety of different eating protocols including high carb low fat, lower carb higher fat.¬†I tried supplementing with pea and rice protein in my green smoothie. I even used a vegan coach to help me. I felt like I was constantly eating in order to make sure I was meeting my needs.

 

Including some animal products

 

It was after my 2nd year as a vegan my naturopath suggested I add in some animal products so I tried adding eggs back in and did this for another year, then tried adding fish back in a did this for another year, and finally dairy back in for my 3rd year as a vegetarian. So just to be clear I was vegan for 2 years and vegetarian for 3 more for 5 years total. At this point I was still supplementing and ate vegan meals weekly because I still believed it was the healthiest choice and I was determined to go back to veganism after my deficiencies resolved. 

 

Life got hard

 

Unfortunately they did not and my symptoms kept getting worse and worse to the point I didn’t want to get out of bed in the morning. I couldn’t work out anymore and I had to stop coaching clients during this time because I didn’t know how I was going to help others if I couldn’t help myself.

 

I've now been carnivore since May 2019 and feel like it's the easiest WOE I've ever followed. I have zero cravings and am happy with eating fatty ribeyes every night.

 

A taste of meat

 

One summer evening 2 years ago Dwayne was grilling burgers (he only lasted 6 weeks as a vegan by the way) and I had the overwhelming feeling to eat one for the first time in years, so I did. I felt so amazing afterwards and had so much energy I decided to add meat back into my diet because I knew my body was telling me something. It only took a few months for my iron levels to shoot up and I stopped supplementing. My digestion also got a lot better. 

 

Getting better on keto

 

While many of my symptoms had improved once I added meat back into my diet I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and interstitial cystitis after seeking answers and treatment from literally every alternative health practitioner out there. I did several elimination diets after getting my diagnosis and kept discovering more and more triggers that would flare up my symptoms. We have done keto diets in the past and I was determined to lose the 30lbs I had slowly put on over the past few years so in January last year I decided to try a clean keto diet with intermittent fasting (basically fatty meat & veggies). After 3 months my symptoms started to get better (mainly my energy) and I lost 20 lbs. 

 

Following my crazy husband (again)

 

During this time Dwayne started doing the carnivore diet and I thought he was nuts. He kept sending me videos and research though and told me it was basically the most extreme (and accurate) elimination diet out there. I watched him do it for a few months while I kept eating my veggies and he was seeing amazing results. I decided I couldn’t say anything against it until I tried it myself and had the goal of doing it for 1 month as an elimination diet and adding foods back in.¬†

 

Rapid changes

 

Within a few weeks my brain fog totally went away, my stomach was no longer bloated, and I had amazing energy. After the month my chronic pain was 95% gone and my eczema disappeared. I did try to add foods back in one at a time starting with avocados and then sauerkraut and my homemade sugar-free coconut yogurt but all of my symptoms came back. I was feeling so good on carnivore I decided to keep doing it until I felt like it was time to play around again. I lost 10 more lbs by the time summer came and looked and felt 10 years younger. 

 

I’ve tried playing around with adding some things back in like blueberries and some other low-sugar fruits and vegetables here and there but symptoms always come back. I’ve now been carnivore since May 2019 and feel like it’s the easiest WOE I’ve ever followed. I have zero cravings and am happy with eating fatty ribeyes every night.

As someone who saw the negative effects of making more plant-based choices first hand I just could not recommend the new food guide that prioritized carbohydrates and does not emphasize the importance of fat or animal foods. 

 

Getting to know our history

 

In our extensive research of the keto and carnivore WOE we’ve learned a lot about anti-nutrients and their role in chronic inflammation and autoimmune conditions. I was also shocked to learn about the history of nutrition recommendations by following the research of Nina Teicolz & Gary Taubes, and how there is a huge plant-based agenda behind our current recommendations from listening to the experience of Gary Fettke and Tim Noakes. As someone who saw the negative effects of making more plant-based choices first hand I just could not recommend the new food guide that prioritized carbohydrates and does not emphasize the importance of fat or animal foods.¬†

I also felt very limited in sharing my story as a dietitian in fear of getting reprimanded even though a high saturated fat keto and carnivore diet has literally changed my and Dwayne’s lives and reversed disease in many others. I wasn’t currently practicing as a dietitian anyway and didn’t feel like my registration was serving me anymore so I decided to resign. Afterall I’ve still had 10 years of nutritional coaching experience with clients and all of my knowledge or my nutrition degree couldn’t be taken away.¬†

Looking back there were so many things I didn‚Äôt understand. I remember doing a clinical case study in school and I was marked down for the meal plan I made for my patient because it was “too healthy” in fear that he wouldn’t comply. This patient was sick and in the hospital with a serious condition clearly caused by a poor diet. Of course I didn’t want to question my instructor though because she was the “expert”. My father, a type 2 diabetic, was in the hospital for a month recently and they kept serving his juice and high carbohydrate foods even though he expressed his concern. I understand that we can’t expect people to change overnight but it doesn’t help when we mislead people into believing their comfort foods are healthy and even serve them in the hospital.

Moderation, actually extreme?

 

Instead “a balanced diet” is always promoted and ‘everything in moderation’ but that is the most confusing term for people. It basically teaches people they can have anything they want as long as it’s not all the time. But does that mean you can still have it daily?¬†What if some of us need to be a little more extreme with our diets because we have extreme conditions and don’t want to resort to something even more extreme like taking medication long-term, surgery, or suffering in misery.¬†

If you look at Health Canada’s guidelines even artificial sweeteners¬†are still considered safe and we are still taught to limit saturated fats even though the new research shows there actually isn’t enough science to prove this. Nutrition science is largely based on epidemiological studies (food records) which we know are unreliable, but Dieticians cannot recommend anything that does not have any studies backing it, so it‚Äôs very difficult to go against the grain.¬†I’ve always been very objective in my beliefs and would rather experience for myself then wait for new guidelines to come out that I now know are driven by a corporate agenda or for research years later.¬†

I am a 58 year old chiropractor who has been in practice for 33 years.  My wife and I started the carnivore diet on September 1, 2018 as a 30 day experiment.  At the end of the month we decided to continue.  Why give up on improved body composition, the end of autoimmune rashes and allergies, better performance in the gym, and generally feeling a lot better.  Thank you Dr. Baker.

As a Marine I am required to be at peak physical readiness. They try and preach ‚Äúgood‚ÄĚ diets but all too often they follow the SAD… so it wasn‚Äôt a surprise when I was meant with significant levels of decent when I went carnivore.


They laughed when I said I was only going to eat meat. They laughed when they looked at my plate and only saw butter, and bacon. They laughed when I turned away vegetables and pasta and bread. ‚ÄúThis is Energy!!‚ÄĚ They Said…

They were SILENT  when I took of my shirt after 30 days and showed them the results.  They were SILENT when I passed them on runs. They were SILENT when I put performed every single one of them in every single physical event.

¬†Sometimes we need to stray away form the ‚Äúnorm‚ÄĚ and do what everyone else isn‚Äôt doing. At the end of the day, I was the one laughing!

Eddie improved digestion, body composition, performance on carnivore diet

Hi Dr. Baker,
My body was rebuilt with beef. I grew up eating a pasta heavy version of the SAD. Hit 270lbs at the age of 21. Dropped to 150lbs in about 10 months on a calorie restricted vegetarian diet when I was 22. By 23 I had developed cyclical vomiting syndrome and IBS as a result of my vegetarian diet.
 
At some point during my search for GI relief I was introduced to Dr. David Pyles a postdoc at UC Davis. This was probably 2005 or 2006, I was slightly alarmed that Dr. Pyles was dressed in a loin cloth. He explained this crazy hunter-gatherer diet that he was on where he would eat only meat for several days, then eat only plants for several days and alternate between the two. 
 
I did not immediately adapt dr Pyles diet, instead i drifted back to the SAD for a couple of years and while my digestion improved my weight shot up to an all time high of 290lbs (pic included). A few years later I was browsing a bookstore and found a copy of Mark Sisson’s primal blueprint. I thumbed through the first few pages and read the Grok cartoon. It made sense, I did not actually buy the book but I did adapt a paleo diet like the one caveman dave told me about. This was 2010, in addition to my diet changes I started running, lifting, and alpine skiing. After just a few months I had lost some weight and was confident enough to start swimming, I then decided to take a job as a lifeguard at the local swimming pool. 
 
In 2011 the pool where I worked started a triathlon club. Our coach was Amy Charity (she went pro in women’s road cycling in 2013). I became her star pupil, showed up for every practice, every running race, every bike time trial, even started racing in the local mountain bike race series (I won the novice division that year) and started following Amy to practices with our local road bike race team. We did two triathlons that summer. I was the fastest local athlete in the second one. (actually from routt county) A week later I competed in my first road bike stage race. Adding larger amounts of animal products to my diet (I was probably eating 2+ pounds of animal products a day back then in addition to a bunch of fruit and veggies) 
 
The following summer I went a bit crazy with the sport. I was the fastest local finisher and won my age group in both triathlons. Won my age group at the local 12 race steamboat springs running series. Competed in 5 endurance mountain bike races ranging in length from 60-100 miles and competed in our local 6 race xc mountain bike race series. I also managed to win my age group at sprint and a half ironman triathlons in denver with fairly large fields. And I managed to compete in 42 seperate USAC sanctioned road bike racing events that summer. That fall I purchased a cyclocross bike and participated in cyclocross races in denver every weekend. That winter I signed up for cross country skiing lessons and picked up a copy of Loren Cordain and Joe Friel‚Äôs ‚Äúpaleo diet for athletes‚ÄĚ.¬†
 
2013 was off the hook. I followed the advice in paleo diet for athletes to the T. I was literally weighing exact portions of raisins and turkey breast out post workout. I started winning the overalls at smaller triathlons and running races. Second place overall in the running series that year. Won the sport category in mountainbiking that year and picked up my first sponsor ‚Äúguerilla tags‚ÄĚ after a podium finish in a local triathlon. Also ran my first Olympic distance triathlon with a sub 36 minute 10k at the end (sub six minute miles after the swim and bike). I started targeting longer triathlons and had some excellent results winning my age group frequently at half ironmans. I couldn‚Äôt quite hold my pace all the way to the finish and had a repeated problem of bonking with about 2 miles to go. Nonetheless even with my 6:30 mile pace dropping to 10/mile for the last couple I was still winning my age group by like 20 minutes but was often 10-15 minutes off the overall podium (frustrating in a four and a half hour race.) I Continued to road bike and cyclocross as well. That summer professional triathlete Heather Gollnick moved to town and noticed my frequent local race wins. She offered me a performance based sponsorship with her Ironedge Triathlon team for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.¬†
 
The winter of 2013/2014 I started racing in cross country skiing and decided to train for a powerlifting competition. I posted very endurance athlete numbers: 300 squat/ 180 bench / 465 deadlift I weighed in the upper 190s which put me in the 208lb class I believe. 2014 went okay, I was training for Ironman boulder with a high volume training schedule and my diet was no longer working as well. I still managed decent race performances and still raced very frequently but my GI was no longer happy and my IBS and CVS came back. Ironman boulder was a bust with my predicted sub 10 hour finish turning into a puke filled 13 hour death march. 
 
The winter of 2014/15 I read about Zach Bitter and his ketogenic diet. I went ‚Äúahah, what if I do a few months of base training on a keto diet? maybe I can train myself to be more fuel sparing on the half Ironman and start winning some overalls?‚ÄĚ I noticed that my GI symptoms immediately got better, my top end performance dipped but my work and recovery capacity dramatically increased. My version of keto was a low veggie high animal product version. Probably 3+ pounds animal products per day: Cheese, Yogurt, red meat, salami, cream, butter, coffee, a little coconut oil(at first), and some nuts (at first). I simultaneously became the leanest and the most muscular I had ever been.¬†
 
That summer I bought my first single speed mountain bike and went back to the paleo diet for athletes protocol. I managed podiums and hit PRs in the first 2 running races and my first ever single speed race. Then I started to get sick again and saw mediocre performance for the rest of the season. 
 
In 2016 I burned out completely! I went back to the SAD and tried to compete a few times with some of the worst results of my life (4:45 half Ironmans turned into 5:45).
 
2017 I read Mark Sisson‚Äôs ‚Äúprimal endurance‚ÄĚ I spent the year rebuilding on a very high meat version of his periodized keto/ TKD plan. I did a few local races but avoided triathlons and anything long. Fall of 2017 I got a singlespeed cyclocross bike and started racing in the singlespeed category in cx. Out of my first 8 starts I took 4 wins, 2 2nds, a 4th, and a flat tire. Then they moved me up a category. After 6 years of racing in Cat4 and never taking better than 10th I had finally moved up and almost instantly once I got on that singlespeed on a meat heavy diet. The little 120 lb jockeys with pencil thin arms have an advantage on a cyclocross course when they have gears but take away that crutch and all of a sudden 185lbs of muscle becomes less of a hinderance. Now singlespeed racing has become my thing. Because of my eating habits: (I‚Äôll grab a double cheeseburger with bacon at mile 40 of a 60 mile training ride while everyone else has coffee and muffins) my nickname on the bike race team is ‚Äúthe butcher‚ÄĚ. The last couple of years of training and racing on a meat heavy diet have been excellent. Last winter I read an article from Georgia Edes and started actively avoiding plants except for targetting small amounts of carbohydrate around races and key training sessions.
 
Last summer I took second in the steamboat running series and won the 30-39 age group. Won a sprint triathlon. Finished midpack
in the pro/open in the 50 mile Steamboat Stinger mountain bike race, then proceeded to take 3rd place male in a sprint triathlon the following morning. Raced in the local town challenge mountain bike race three days later then took 5th place singlespeed in the 144 mile gravel race 3 days after that. The following weekend I ran a 50k ultramarathon. The following weekend I won my age group at the 10k at 10,000’ running race next day I took second in the Oak creek 6k no fun run. I also held my own in the expert series of xc mountain bike racing and made a point of joining the roadies on plenty of long rides on my singlespeed also improved my times at all of the local road bike time trials. Held my own in the pro/open singlespeed cyclocross division all fall as well. 
 
After reading dr Baker‚Äôs book this winter I have gone full carnivore, centering my diet on several pounds of fatty red meat. No plants, lots of eggs, some dairy. A couple of weeks ago I put up my first 320lb squat at a bodyweight of 190. I am literally the strongest I have ever been at 35yo. My recovery is ridiculously fast. My work capacity is near endless. I‚Äôve noticed that If I adhere to smart training tactics like heart rate limiting, complete recovery heavy lifting, alactic sprinting, etc I can train my base for hours a day, day after day and actually become stronger and faster rather than breaking down. I call it ‚Äúsled-dogging‚ÄĚ sled dogs eat a high fat all meat diet run for many hours day after day and actually show less stress from day to day. Just like a human on the proper diet.¬†
 
This year I have already signed up for four triathlons, round 3 at the 144 mile single speed race, The running series, and the mountain bike series. This winter I have competed in all of the local cross country ski races (classic and skate) and some ski mountaineering races on my telemarks with climbing skins. I have a cross country ski marathon coming up at the end of the month.. Ill probably do a ski-mo race the day before. One place I’ve noticed that has really improved since adding more meat is my alpine skiing. I’ve lived in a ski town most of my life and have always enjoyed skiing. The last couple of years, this year especially I have been skiing much more aggressively. I like to ski the moguls and I like to ski them hard and fast. Since going full carnivore it seems i now have the energy and the confidence to launch aerial tricks off the cat tracks in between the mogul sections. Ive always been a wimp when it came to air time. Now I’m considering competing in freestyle skiing. I think the goal at this point is to use the carnivore diet to be able to compete at an elite level in a huge variety of sports while gaining physical strength as I age.
