Kurt improved his digestion, mood and anxiety on a carnivore diet

Growing up I had gut issues the majority of my childhood. I would regularly get bloated and experience stomach cramps and diarrhea after meals. All the while others eating the same foods would have much less of a reaction. I saw several specialists, experienced several uncomfortable exams and tests and we never found a “cause” that was treatable in these doctors’ eyes.

 

By my teenage years I began suffering from terrible acne. I had such oily skin and clogged pores that in middle school it created real shame. After trying many treatments (proactive, retinol cream, differin gel) and seeing a dermatologist for years I started taking the prescription drug Accutane. 

 

For 6 months while on this medication I had several unpleasant side effects. I had regular nose bleeds, dry throat and felt myself being dried from the inside out. It completely wrecked my sense of smell and taste. Years later I ended up having to undergo sinus surgery to clear sinus scarring, and I can only smell and taste 20-30% of what I could before going on this medication.

 

As my gut issues persisted, I started manifesting an anxiety disorder into sophomore year of college. While studying pre-med, I experienced my first anxiety attack in a professor’s office. I started heating up, sweating profusely, as my heart pounded rapidly. It totally freaked me out. It was not a pleasant experience and started me down the path to avoid any and all situations that could trigger my anxious symptoms of overheating. 

 

The fear of becoming anxious trapped me from facing things I feared, being challenged. I was terrified to get “caught” in a situation where I would experience them and lose control of my feelings and body’s reaction.


Despite this I still managed to successfully graduate college, join Microsoft and then excel at Zillow for nearly a decade as I mastered a career in sales.

 

Fast forward going into 2014-2015. I left the corporate world to pursue my entrepreneurial dream. To build a business and generate income through my digital agency, Crushvertise. I was experiencing more responsibility and stress than I had ever learned to manage. 

 

I began exploring diet and lifestyle changes to help build my resiliency and ability to handle more. I studied Bulletproof concepts, Tim Ferris and I was starting to practice intermittent fasting, paleo diets and incorporate more keto dieting. I began adding bulletproof coffee (butter, MCT oil) regularly and later started adding afternoon superfood smoothies. Those often consisted of kale, spinach, almond butter, blueberries, flax seeds, chia seeds, honey, cacao nibs and cinnamon.

 

I thought if I could fuel my body with these “powerful” “healthful” foods I would thrive and be better equipped to handle my anxiety and stress. I figured the healthy antioxidant superfoods combined with a “balanced” “healthy” diet would give me a level of resilience I truly desired.

 

Unfortunately my anxiety and mood continued to deteriorate. I began waking up anxious, and those feelings would climb. By 10am most mornings I was a wreck and needed to take a break simply to allow anxious feelings to calm. This continued for months until I had another panic attack in my office that ultimately left me traumatized and depressed. 

 

All the while I just so happened to be attending a gym at the same location and time that Dr. Paul Saladino (@CarnivoreMD) went to as well. As we bumped into each other and I was able to foster a friendship we quickly became good buds. He was studying psychiatry and I was desperate to get to the source of what was going on with me.

 

We were both active and passionate about wellness and optimization. We didn’t have any knowledge about the Carnivore Diet at that time but that changed very quickly.

 

We did extensive blood panels and GI maps to look for anything and everything that might be causing my mental and gut health issues. Despite our invasive search, nothing obvious stood out. There were no pathogens or issues that came up and we didn’t see any clear reasons for why I was in the condition I was.


I chalked it up to needing to work on my thought pattern and began deeply working on studying and counseling with therapists and specialists to learn more about anxiety and mental health.

 

While I was making some progress in this area Paul saw Dr. Shawn Baker’s interview about the Carnivore Diet on The Joe Rogan experience and found it quite intriguing. Dr. Saladino was treating patients dealing with mental health and he kept seeing them relapse and/or simply not get well with current treatment protocols.

 

Paul started Carnivore and he almost immediately started encouraging me to try it when I’d see him. A few weeks after, I followed and went full on Carnivore. Almost immediately I noticed an improvement in my mood. Gut issues continued, but skin and mood started to swing up quickly and drastically.

 

Paul and I would share meals and experiment with different animal foods, sourcing and prep. It took us a while but we started learning more about raw fats, organ meats and sourcing from regenerative farms. 

 

Six months after starting the diet and I was able to see my gut issues completely remiss and with that almost no anxiety anymore. I remember at one point thinking to myself I had completely forgotten what it was like to eat something and experience gut dis-ease.

 

Fast forward another nearly year, I’ve gone from fabio, pale frail Kurt struggling emotionally to lumberjack, vital, fit bearded me. The transformation has been incredible.

 

My emotional state and gut health has completely transformed and this diet has had a tremendous impact in this part of my life change. Since beginning Carnivore I’ve done several rounds of labs, testing hormones, inflammation, micronutrients and toxins. I’ve deeply documented my journey on my Youtube, Instagram and now in my book, The Carnivore Diet. 

 

If you’ve dealt with chronic anxiety or gut issues, I highly encourage you to learn more from my content. This doesn’t have to be a life sentence, you can heal and recover. I know what it’s like to feel “stuck” and not make progress in these areas, but it is possible to recover. I’ve worked hard to get to the root cause and now feel as though I have it handled. The Carnivore Diet done well can be a powerful tool to assist you on the road to recovery.

Krissy improved her digestion, chronic pain, mood, anxiety, and cravings caused by a vegan diet by eating a carnivore diet

Krissy’s Background: I always had an interest in health from the time I was young when I worked as a lifeguard, swam, and was very active. I originally wanted to become a doctor to help others with their health so my first degree was in Biology. 

 

I discovered the importance of nutrition for health in my last year of my biology degree and took a nutrition course. I fell in love with nutrition science and physiology and decided to go back to school to study nutrition. I got my Bachelors of Science in Applied Human Nutrition and became registered as a Dietitian in 2009. I was also a certified personal trainer and started my own private practice/private training studio after this where I worked with clients looking for fat loss and building muscle, as well as fitness athletes.  

 

Why Vegan: I was always considered healthy, fit, and active. I followed the recommended “balanced diet” with lots of variety and the common nutritious foods but had to make modifications due to having IBS such as cutting out dairy and gluten. I was very conscious of making healthy choices based on the nutrition guidelines I learned in school. 

 

My husband Dwayne and I love learning about health so one day he started watching the documentary “Forks Over Knives” and decided he wanted to give a plant-based diet a try. I was not convinced at first because a plant-based diet was not a common practice when I studied nutrition and I wanted to be objective. Then we watched “Vegucated” and “Earthlings” and like many others I was terrified into believing animal products were bad for long-term health. I did some research at that time based on the resources provided in these documentaries and decided to join Dwayne. I didn’t realize at the time how one sided this research was however. I took a course in plant-based nutrition and was determined to prove it was possible to thrive on a vegan diet. 

 

The health decline: I felt great in my first year as a vegan. We now know this as the “vegan honeymoon phase”. Maybe it’s because I thought I was doing the best thing for my health, the environment and the animals. But it was after my first year that my health started to decline. 

 

I discovered I had low iron and vitamin D. I also developed chronic fatigue and chronic pain, was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis started to get skin issues and eczema patches for the first time in my life, my hormones were out of whack which was affecting my mood and cycles, my digestion was awful even though I wasn’t consuming gluten and I soaked everything, and I developed anxiety and mild depression. I also slowly started to gain weight when I had never struggled with my weight in the past. 

 

I started to see a naturopath who prescribed me natural supplements in addition to the iron and vitamin D I was now taking. I also took B12, a multivitamin, and plant-based omega-3 oil all while following a balanced whole foods plant-based diet. Of course all of the vegans tell me “I didn’t do it right” but if anyone researched hard enough on how to it was me! After-all I was determined to make it work because I also coaching vegan clients and made a whole business around plant-based diets and challenges. I was known as an expert in the industry and has a big social media following so of course I wanted to make this work. 

 

I didn’t eat processed vegan foods or junk. I ate a lot of avocados, chickpeas, lentils, vegetables, low sugar fruits, nuts and seeds, gluten-free whole grains, coconut oil, nutritional yeast, and drank only water and tea. I did not restrict calories and I prepared all of my meals at home. I also tried a variety of different eating protocols including high carb low fat, lower carb higher fat, I tried supplementing with pea and rice protein in my green smoothie. I even used a vegan coach to help me. I felt like I was constantly eating in order to make sure I was meeting my needs.

 

Yes to meat: It was after my 2nd year as a vegan my naturopath suggested I add in some animal products so I tried adding eggs back in and did this for another year, then tried adding fish back in a did this for another year, and finally dairy back in for my 3rd year as a vegetarian. So just to be clear I was vegan for 2 years and vegetarian for 3 more for 5 years total. At this point I was still supplementing and ate vegan meals weekly because I still believed it was the healthiest choice and I was determined to go back to veganism after my deficiencies resolved. 

 

Unfortunately they did not and my symptoms kept getting worse and worse to the point I didn’t want to get out of bed in the morning. I couldn’t work out anymore and I had to stop coaching clients during this time because I didn’t know how I was going to help others if I couldn’t help myself. One summer evening 2 years ago Dwayne was grilling burgers (he only lasted 6 weeks as a vegan by the way) and I had the overwhelming feeling to eat one for the first time in years, so I did. I felt so amazing afterwards and had so much energy I decided to add meat back into my diet because I knew my body was telling me something. It only took a few months for my iron levels to shoot up and I stopped supplementing. My digestion also got a lot better. 

 

Why carnivore: While many of my symptoms had improved once I added meat back into my diet I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and interstitial cystitis after seeking answers and treatment from literally every alternative health practitioner out there. I did several elimination diets after getting my diagnosis and kept discovering more and more triggers that would flare up my symptoms. We have done keto diets in the past and I was determined to lose the 30lbs I had slowly put on over the past few years so in January last year I decided to try a clean keto diet with intermittent fasting (basically fatty meat & veggies). After 3 months my symptoms started to get better (mainly my energy) and I lost 20 lbs. 

 

During this time Dwayne started doing the carnivore diet and I thought he was nuts. He kept sending me videos and research though and told me it was basically the most extreme (and accurate) elimination diet out there. I watched him do it for a few months while I kept eating my veggies and he was seeing amazing results. I decided I couldn’t say anything against it until I tried it myself and had the goal of doing it for 1 month as an elimination diet and adding foods back in. 

 

Within a few weeks my brain fog totally went away, my stomach was no longer bloated, and I had amazing energy. After the month my chronic pain was 95% gone and my eczema disappeared. I did try to add foods back in one at a time starting with avocados and then sauerkraut and my homemade sugar-free coconut yogurt but all of my symptoms came back. I was feeling so good on carnivore I decided to keep doing it until I felt like it was time to play around again. I lost 10 more lbs by the time summer came and looked and felt 10 years younger. 

 

I’ve tried playing around with adding some things back in like blueberries and some other low-sugar fruits and vegetables here and there but symptoms always come back. I’ve now been carnivore since May 2019 and feel like it’s the easiest WOE I’ve ever followed. I have zero cravings and am happy with eating fatty ribeyes every night.

Why I resigned as a dietitian: In our extensive research of the keto and carnivore WOE we’ve learned a lot about anti-nutrients and their role in chronic inflammation and autoimmune conditions. I was also shocked to learn about the history of nutrition recommendations by following the research of Nina Teicolz & Gary Taubes, and how there is a huge plant-based agenda behind our current recommendations from listening to the experience of Gary Fettke and Tim Noakes. As someone who saw the negative effects of making more plant-based choices first hand I just could not recommend the new food guide that prioritized carbohydrates and does not emphasize the importance of fat or animal foods. 

 

I also felt very limited in sharing my story as a dietitian in fear of getting reprimanded even though a high saturated fat keto and carnivore diet has literally changed my and Dwayne’s lives and reversed disease in many others. I wasn’t currently practicing as a dietitian anyway and didn’t feel like my registration was serving me anymore so I decided to resign. Afterall I’ve still had 10 years of nutritional coaching experience with clients and all of my knowledge or my nutrition degree couldn’t be taken away. 

 

Looking back there were so many things I didn’t understand. I remember doing a clinical case study in school and I was marked down for the meal plan I made for my patient because it was “too healthy” in fear that he wouldn’t comply. This patient was sick and in the hospital with a serious condition clearly caused by a poor diet. Of course I didn’t want to question my instructor though because she was the “expert”. My father, a type 2 diabetic, was in the hospital for a month recently and they kept serving his juice and high carbohydrate foods even though he expressed his concern. I understand that we can’t expect people to change overnight but it doesn’t help when we mislead people into believing their comfort foods are healthy and even serve them in the hospital. Instead “a balanced diet” is always promoted and everything is moderation but that is the most confusing term for people. It basically teaches people they can have anything they want as long as it’s not all the time. But does that mean you can still have it daily? 

What if some of us need to be a little more extreme with our diets because we have extreme conditions and don’t want to resort to something even more extreme like taking medication long-term, surgery, or suffering in misery. 

 

If you look at Health Canada’s guidelines even artificial sweeteners are still considered safe and we are still taught to limit saturated fats even though the new research shows there actually isn’t enough science to prove this. Nutrition science is largely based on epidemiological studies (food records) which we know are unreliable, but Dieticians cannot recommend anything that does not have any studies backing it, so it’s very difficult to go against the grain. I’ve always been very objective in my beliefs and would rather experience for myself then wait for new guidelines to come out that I now know are driven by a corporate agenda or for research years later.

Dragos improved his heartburn, back pain, poor sleep and lost weight on a carnivore diet

Hello, Meat RX team, 

 
My name is Dragos I’m 38 and 18 months ago i started cleaning up my eating with some keto but for close to a year I’ve been mainly carnivore also eating only once a day. 
I was 222lbs on Dec 31st 2018, now at 178lbs i feel better than ever. 
I played waterpolo from 11 to 24 and was exercising close to 4-5 hrs a day in my teens and 20s. 
Needless to say growing up in Eastern Europe in the 90s in a middle class household our red meat intake was minimal if not zero / week. 
Grew up stuffing my face with carbs and sugar. I was eating a loaf of bread a day easily accompanied by lots of potatoes also was eating raw sugar most days after practice in order to partially tame my craving for protein. 
Problem was a i took these bad eating habits with me in my late 20s and 30s long after i stopped working out 4-5hrs / day. 
At my worst i was 222lbs ( in the 1st pic ) , constantly tired, getting very poor quality sleep, stomach and heart burns, low back, neck and knee pain was always present. I would go take naps in my car during my lunch break and going to the bathroom was not a fun experience considering the bad case of hemorrhoids i was suffering from. 
I just want to point out that my muscular skeleton has never been as healthy or toned as it is now at 38 not even when i was in my peak physical shape playing in my early 20s and what’s crazy is i accomplished this in a little over a year. 
These days I barely lift weights, mostly do cardio and HIIT classes at my gym + 4-5hrs of Jiu-jitsu a week. 
I feel amazing and red meat is the no. 1 through no. 99 reasons this is possible.

Jon lost weight, improved his fitness, pain and cardiovascular health on a carnivore diet

With every word I type I am cringing like mad. I never wanted to do anything like this but the last few months have led me to writing this blog. The number of people asking questions or making comments have forced my hand a little. The main aim of this blog is to document what I am doing and hopefully something in here can help someone. I am also not going to sugar coat any of this or write it like a “real” writer. I am just writing it how I would tell you it in the person.

Ever since I turned 18 I have struggled with my weight. I’ve been on a diet or thinking about being on a diet or being told I need to go on a diet since. In the past I have had one major weight loss success, getting down to 97kg in November 2015 but before six months were over I was back above 110kg. The years between then and now have been the most frustrating. There was always a reason why I kept failing and I was just looking for the next excuse to binge or get a pizza ordered.

I had done loads of different diets in the past. Keto, chicken and rice, vegan, Palaeolithic , calorie counting apps, juice diet. I had success with chicken, sweet potato and broccoli for lunch every day in 2015 but every time after that I had tried it, I just couldn’t stick to it. I even ran weight loss competitions at work to try and sort myself out but none of it worked. It got to the point where I was just miserable after every meal, struggling to be a good dad, waking up feeling tired every day and something needed to change.

I was working in Manchester and had recently moved offices to further away from the main train station. This was a 15 minute waddle across town. The first few times I did this I was fine but after a few more times I started getting pain in my feet and ankles. So I started catching the free bus. Sitting with the over 60’s, folk in wheelchairs or the people who were morbidly obese. At 31, I was embarrassed to be on this bus.

I knew I had to do something but didn’t know what, so I spoke to a colleague. He is an ex-Marine, built like a tank and is one of the most intelligent people I know. We talked about Keto and how when I tried it the first time I probably didn’t do it properly, but would be one of the best ways for me to shift the weight. I said that I was sick of the sight of spinach broccoli and mushrooms, and that I am a salad dodger. He then said something that has changed my life.

“If you can’t be bothered with the veg, then don’t eat it. You don’t need it anyway. Google “Carnivore Diet”…”

The Carnivore Diet Experiment

Monday 1st April 2019 – Weight 122kg/ 19 stones 3lbs

After a few hours of research and not really understanding the complex nature of a true carnivore diet, I went into April knowing I had 40 days before going on holiday. It was only to Butlins at Skegness but it was to be my first real break from work since August 2018 and a good length of time away to try and lose some weight. My aim was to lose 24lbs and get to 17 and half stones. I went into it with my eyes shut and just literally ate any meat product I could. I committed to researching the diet a few hours a week and also to stop drinking any booze.

I decided early on to couple the diet with intermittent fasting. I had to get up early to get to work on time so skipping breakfast was easy. The first few days were rough. The food tasted amazing but I soon realised I was reacting to any dairy I was eating. The first week ended and I wondered if it was all worth it. I got weighed and saw that I had lost 9lbs. In a week.

Soon I was doing 10-12 hours of research every week and had cut down to eating one meal per day. I also started doing 36 hour fasts every week and even a 60 hour fast at one point. I just didn’t need to eat as much. Cutting out all sugar, all carbs and all plant food was meaning the meals I were eating were extremely filling. That being filling without the bloating and the “food coma” feeling. I had got to a point where I was basically only eating beef and prawns with occasional meal of chicken and chorizo or pork belly when I started to lose will power.

The 40 day challenge ended and I felt miles better. I was happily walking to and from the office with no pain, training 3 or 4 days a week, with no soreness the next day even though I was working harder than ever. To top it off I had smashed my target and lost 35lbs. I went on holiday and came off the diet but committed to getting right back on it when I got home to see how far it could take me.

The more I read and learnt about the diet, the more that other people told me I was an idiot or would have a heart attack, the more convinced I became that this was the perfect diet for me and something I could stick to longer term. I was still loving the food and loving the results.

In the past when I lost weight, as the weight came down so did the strength. This time I was getting stronger and stronger. I even started to run on the treadmill. For anyone that knows me or played football with me will say, I hate running and I am lazy but I wanted to prove I could do it and run for 5km without stopping.

By the end of August I had been on the diet for 5 months and people were commenting on my appearance all the time. The comments made are what sparked the idea for this blog as I was being asked all the time what I had done. The changes were drastic.

Friday 30th August 2019 – Results Day

The end of the five months Carnivore Diet experiment came at the end of the 3rd week of my new job. It had been a pretty stressful few weeks given the new routine and being out of the house 6am to 6pm every day. While trying to impress the new bosses and hit the ground running I had stopped training at lunch as much but was keeping up with the diet. Id given myself my birthday off but had stayed pretty consistent for the whole five months, give or take a few cheat meals when hitting milestones plus my week off in May.

I had also booked in for a blood test on the advice of a former colleague who was concerned that I was killing myself. Either that or he wanted to be proved right that meat is evil and a plant based diet is optimal. I was due a blood test anyway and found my old results from the previous two years. Both tests were couple with blood pressure checks, and both sets of results showed the start of problems that would either see me on medication before I am 35 or face being a heart attack risk. Pre-hypertension, pre-diabetes, low HDL, high triglycerides. It was pretty grim reading that back now that I was feeling so much better about myself. I had the blood test in June so the results may well be better now but I will retest them in the 2020 when I hit my end target.

Tracking the results each week gets addictive when you are improving week on week, so I knew I had done pretty well and it was the final push to hit the 5 stones mark. I knew that if I saw 90.3kg or lower on the scale then I had done it. I got on, held my breath and saw it flash up. 90.1kg. Get in.

Charlie lost weight, and improved his insulin resistance on a carnivore diet

About 2 years ago the VA had me attend nutrition training as my weight was going up and up. Calories in, calories out. I was so hungry I kept failing.  VA offered to send me to the SAME training over again.
 
16 or 17 Months ago my A1C hit 6.1 so I started reading and vids. Then one evening one of my feet wouldn’t fit into my shoe.
 
VA said I was heading towards diabetes. Offering me the SAME training again.
 
Decided to go Keto/Carnivore but to avoid Keto Flu I went on an 8 day fast. While fasting still in Day Eight  I went in for my bloodwork at the VA. They were shocked at my LDL and Triglycerides count and told me to stop fat and meat and take pills.  THEN I called them out: I went from hardly any meat to total fasting, my numbers go up and they blamed food I was not eating.  QUACKS!
 
That was 13 months ago, last November. 
 
Now I know FAR MORE than my VA doc and VA nutritionist who can’t even explain to me what is a Triglyceride and why LDL is supposed to be bad.
 
Autumn of 2018 I hit 262 pounds. By this Summer I hit and maintain 210 -217 range comfortably. 
 
No more near fainting spells if I don’t eat every three hours.  Now I can go for DAYS without eating.
 
Funny, my pre-med son is learning chemistry and biology and he agrees that LDL is just a (harmless) transport vehicle.  His current training is the opposite of what the practicing  docs and nutritionist AR the VA say.  For brevity I gave them links to Dr. Berg’s short videos explaining LDL and Triglycerides. They both said, “I can’t believe you “trust” a chiropractor more than us. 
 
“trust”…….   “trust”……    how about new research instead of blind faith in dogma?
 
In reviewing a year of food logging I see that I consume a lot of eggs.  Vegetarians would say this is carnivore. But I must be 100% honest and admit this to ask: “Shouldn’t we include (chicken) eggs along with meat?”  
 
Yes, except for about 20 days I kept a log of everything I shoved in my face. If Dr. Baker would like this data I can send the log file.
 
Today’weight 211 pounds, down from 262 about a year ago.
 
I hope that eating eggs could be considered “carnivore” for the purposes of this program. I’ve watched all the Dr. Fung vids on the chemistry of Keto/Carnivore. Seems to me eggs could be considered “carnivore” as the VA docs still claim they’re as deadly as meat.
 
Thank you for your time. I would like to become a coach because I have learned so much and would love to share this with others. It simply works.
 
I neglected to mention one COMPLETELY unexpected benefit: mental clarity.  It felt like a (brain) fog lifted.

Tom lost weight and improved his anxiety on a carnivore diet

Thank you so much for the opportunity to be a part of something so great it WILL change the world!

I’m a rambler but I’ll try to keep this brief. Sorry I failed.. haha
 
My success story starts when I was 16 or 17, as a kid I had chronic bronchitis and this one particular year my Dr. prescribed me 2 drugs (erythromycin and seldane) which made me deathly ill. Seldane has since been removed from circulation. A year later, thank God I recovered, I found out on the local news broadcast that these 2 specific drugs… if taken together, could be fatal. At that point, even as a kid, I knew I had to take my health in my own hands and I began to learn and experiment. 

Taking a more naturopahtic approach I’ve tried, succeeded and failed on every diet that’s been created. Some of them were tried for weight loss and most were tried out of sheer boredom. I also started to learn more about fasting about 20 or so years ago. Around that time is when I went vegan. I was a “vegetarian” with my partner at the time but we ate eggs and fish. My opinion was if we’re not going to eat meat, we should be vegans and avoid ALL animal products, though I justified that fish do not have nervous systems so they can’t feel the pain of death, haha yeah I was that dude. Anyway, I felt pretty good from what I can remember but ever since that time frame I had serious bloating, cramping and general daily discomfort in my stomach. I ate all the fiber “they” tell you to eat and that psyllium husk plastic trash “they” recommend and nothing worked it just seemed to continue day in and day out. Don’t even get my started about the frequency of my bathroom visits.. WOW. 

Anyway, having tried Adkins back when it first came out, which I enjoyed but still believed a “balanced” diet was the right thing, I still explored. I eventually ballooned to over 304 lbs, having told a buddy of mine… “I’ll get 300 lbs, you watch” haha like it was some kind of an accomplishment. Well I did and it wasn’t. I joined a program called The Quick Weight Loss Diet, which promotes 5-7 meals a day, “balanced” metabolism boosting structure, which actually worked, coupled with lots of good outdoor exercise I was able to drop down to 193 lbs. I hate to use this as an excuse but when I lost my mother in 2015 I just stopped caring and went back to eating pizza and garbage like that and blew back up to 287 lbs. Que 2019, late January, the love of my life mentioned going on the “Keto diet”. I never heard of it but she said it’s a low carb high fat diet. I joked with her stating, oh yeah I’ve don’t the Adkins diet, I guess they call it Keto these days and didn’t really take it seriously until I started to do my research.

 She was pretty stoked so that made me more interested. Well long story… well longer… we went all in on Keto. Got cookbooks, made fat bombs, did the whole thing and within the first few month she and I had lost over 60 lbs between the 2 of us. I was back in the 240s and feeling optimistic; however, the stomach issues remained. I was also starting to feeling higher levels of anxiety and stress for some odd reason. My normal fun loving energetic disposition had disappeared and I couldn’t figure out why. I tried meditation, even tried CBD products and nothing was helping. I started watching Dr. Baker’s videos and others that promoted a “carnivore diet”, the Peterson’s with their great successes (more mental based), so I became even more and more interested and as I learned more it made so much sense to me. 

When something makes sense and clicks in my brain I run with it. Now in my 7th month carnivore, I’m down over 77 lbs, I’ve dropped 10 pant sizes (44 now just about 34), I’ve completely eliminated the stomach issues I’ve dealt with daily for over 20 yrs (that happened in month #1 actually) and my anxiety and stress are all but gone. My energy levels are those I remember back when I used to play hockey (was a goaltender… yes I was VERY good… haha) in my 20s and the strength, both physical and maybe more importantly, mental has been greatly increasing daily. This has been such an amazing experience I spend my off days chatting (well rambling really… you can imagine… ;-)) in the carnivore and fasting groups in hopes of helping just 1 person change their perspective and have an idea or thought I share connect with them and make sense. Some say I have and that’s outstanding.

 All I can do is share and people will do what they do. I’m super excited to be starting my MeatRx coaching program and becoming a coach. This is such an awesome opportunity to share the Proper Human Diet with the world and I’m very thankful to be a part of it. Thank you for reading my story and cheers to good health!

April improved her eating disorder on a carnivore diet

For years I struggled with binge eating after a bikini comp. Looking back, I realized I entered the bikini comp during an intense manic phase due to my bipolar disorder. Before the bikini comp I had no issues with binging, even when I was an undiagnosed as having bipolar disorder. The competition served as a trigger and from that point on (almost 10 years ago) I would start a cycle of binging and restricting.   During my binges I used the excuse of bulking…and the weight I got to was 138. As soon as I saw that weight I would restrict back to 122. Rinse and repeat. Even at 138 I never looked very heavy to others. Did not feel good or sexy at that weight…just looked “normal”. And I never wanted to be the “best friend of the sexy girl”. I wanted to be the “sexy one”. Lol. But the food addiction prevented that.  

What did I eat during my food addiction? –  

 I was eating 4 to 5 containers of frosting a night, 2 dozen donuts for breakfast…etc..ppl thought it was funny bc I was tiny and could eat all of that..Except it was not funny. Noone would laugh at a heroin addict
. Why did I stay tiny? Because I would overexercise for hours the next day by running for hours or biking from one end of Chicago to the other, or eating until I vomited.  Eventually my manic phase would end and I would enter the depressive state and gain weight until I hit 138 lbs, I’d see the number. Rinse and repeat for over a decade.

And then 2017. The year that changed my life.  Back when I thought my life was over. The man I loved left me. I attempted suicide and sent to a psych hospital.  I was given a psych med (one of the most notorious weight gainers on the market with a BLACK BOX warning which stated that users may develop metabolic syndrome.) I was sure I wouldn’t. I was an athlete after all. But I was no snowflake. This med made me go from 122 to 155 in less than 3 months. 

  Overexercising no longer worked. Restricting didn’t work.  I even stopped binging for a bit to become more healthy  and decided to eat healthy whole grains and more veggies and fruits. Nothing worked. I was no longer suicidal but depressed about my weight. I binged again. Now my binges showed.  My fasting glucose rose and now my weight rose to 165. I had never been that weight. Not even when I was pregnant. I stopped weighing. Enter Keto. 

I lost weight in rapid succession by cutting out grains and sugars. I reached my “goal”. or what I thought was my goal. I went from 165 to 112 ….but still struggled with binging, even on keto. In Jan/ Feb I binged on keto sweets and fat bombs which led me to binging on the real deal. 2 boxes of cupcakes and a whole sheetcake. Soon I was 127. Not 165.. but 127. Sure it wasn’t as big as I used to be, but it was a sign I had to get my binging under control. 

I did strict keto and got down to 119 lbs.  I looked great, I figured this was my goal weight. No need to lose anymore weight or bodyfat, but I still struggled with cravings and the urge to binge. It was strong. And I knew it was a matter of time before I would give in.  So I went carnivore.

I cut out all fruits and veggies, just meat, eggs and fish in hope I could conquer this demon once and for all. 

My appetite reduced to the point I could now eat once a day. Sugar cravings left. Psoriasis which I had struggled with- GONE.  My psych meds were reduced and then eliminated with the approval of my psychiatrist!  Most importantly- no binge urges for sugary foods! Gone. GONE! GOne! And interesting enough.. I thought I had reached peak physique with keto. Not true. Carnivore took me down a path I had never gone before with not much effort! I looked better 10 years after I did a bikini comp with less exercise and no feelings of deprivation! My weight and bodyfat went down again with carnivore. I have never been this lean in my life, even compared with keto.  People think I compete! True, I do compete in strength sports- olympic lifting and kettlebell sport. But I do not compete in bikini or figure. Yet people think I do!  I don’t have any ups or down and no bipolar episodes since carnivore.   Meat truly does heal.

Emma improved her digestion, mood/mental health, and skin on a carnivore diet

Thank you to everyone who has played a role in promoting awareness of the carnivore diet.

I’m now 42. For my entire life until several years ago, I suffered from crippling digestive issues that were completely fixed by a nearly carnivorous diet. I had constant gut pain; seriously evil diarrhea multiple times daily; socially disabling gas; and severe mental and emotional problems, which I believe were diet-related, as they all resolved with very-low-carb eating.

I had tried being vegetarian and vegan for some years, for ethical reasons. My husband went vegan, too (his choice, I swear). We lost our health — we had grey skin that bled easily, our nails cracked off, our hair fell out, and we were completely fatigued, with a strange feeling of heaviness in our limbs. People sometimes asked my husband if he had cancer. But the science said that we were getting all our micronutrient requirements, and blood tests showed that we weren’t deficient in anything our doctor considered important.

I gave up my stubborn ideology when I read David Gillespie’s “Big Fat Lies”, which explained that saturated fat and cholesterol are needed by every single cell for the integrity and strength of the cell wall and cell membrane. That single piece of information helped me understand how young and how manipulated the biological sciences are.

I am extremely grateful to the animals I consume. On carni, it struck me repeatedly how sacred the act of eating another living being can be. I hope that environmentally sound, healthful and humane farming methods become mainstream.

But what I would like to highlight here is how going from very-low-carb to carnivore helped me overcome a health crisis last year.

My husband and I got gastroenteritis after eating out. His case took a week to resolve, but a month later I was feeling worse and worse, with increasing stomach pain every time I ate. I cried in my doctor’s office, feeling desperate for help. She told me it was stress and prescribed me a proton-pump-inhibitor antacid, which I later discovered would worsen the acid-production cycle.

I tried carnivore instead. And I was better the next day.

I wasn’t fat, but over the next six months I lost 5kg (about 11 pounds), which took me down to weights I hadn’t seen since my teens. After the first month, I had so much energy! I have always gone to bed as early as I can, but on carni I was doing Tracy Anderson workouts at 10pm through sheer wired joy.

I’ve put all the weight back on after reintroducing dairy in an attempt to substitute it for alcohol (not successful!). I hope to cut both again soon. I come back here regularly for the inspiration to start again.

PS: On carnivore I was rarely hungry, so it seemed a no-brainer to try intermittent fasting. I did so twice, each time for a fortnight, separated by a period of months. I had no trouble with the fasting aspect, but each time I seemed to trigger crushing, black depression that I hadn’t experienced for a decade, and which resolved as soon as I made myself eat more. I’d just like to put that out there for anyone who finds themselves on a downward mental spiral while experimenting with diet. Maybe it’s a female thing.

Stephen improved his blood sugar, dental health, digestion, mood/mental health, sex, and skin, and treated his back pain and headaches on a carnivore diet

I am 25, 175lbs, stronger, happier, with better skin and digestion, than I’ve had since I was 17. Growing up, my family, in an attempt to chastise me or tease me, gave me a sort of nickname regarding food: “cookies, cakes and candies.” I loved sweets, and was known to eat all my brothers’ winter oreos or popsicles, cereal, or what have you. In high school and college I would legitimately have cereal as 1/3 of my diet (or more), along with bagels, bread, ice cream, etc. In high school some of my best friends made fun of me because I would sometimes even come prepared with a bagel in my pocket.

 Then in college, everything started hitting the fan and my world started spinning: I began to have constant, I mean constant, stomach pain all day long, from the morning I awoke to going to sleep. Some friends in college persuaded me, along ethical lines (not nutritional) to try vegetarianism and veganism, so I was the former for a year and a half and the latter for 8-10 months— it was horrible. I ate tons of fruit, granola, cereal, soy ice cream, cider— I was rail thin, weak, tired, and eventually became very sick.

In Summer 2014, after a year of veg/anism, I went abroad and returned with a fever that stayed and left me almost bedridden for over a month; the apartment I was living in had black mold, and I didn’t have much energy each day. I brushed it off and got back to school, but friends around me realized I wasn’t myself— my energy was gone, I was becoming more irritable and withdrawn, I had panic attacks and my stomach constantly hurt all day long. 

It eventually got so bad that I needed an ice pack strapped to my chest just to sleep, had various GI tests, got my gallbladder removed, and had constant searing back pain as well (which I also needed an ice pack just to sleep too). It was the worst couple years of my life, and I felt like there was no way out— praying and meditating alone and with friends, celebrating Eucharist at Church, being with friends, playing music, hiking and reading poetry were the only things that gave me solace as I became sort of a recluse.

Problems:

  • Hypoglycemia (probably pre-diabetic)
  • brain fog, poor memory, low mental acuity
  • low energy, chronic fatigue
  • intense anxiety, panic attacks (was medicated) for years
  • depression and mood swings
  • GERD
  • IBS
  • diarrhea for years
  • chronic stomach pain
  • failed gallbladder
  • Skin eczema/rashes (sometimes bled)
  • low libido (hormonal imbalance)
  • chronic back pain
  • headaches
  • lip sores
  • eye inflammation
  • easy sunburn
  • some random tumors/cysts
  • anemia
  • poor dental health

My mom and brother had been off of gluten and sugar for years by the time I was in college, they were nominally following Robb Wolf and the Paleo movement, but they did not know or practice a Keto or Carnivore Way of Eating. By 2017 I started eliminating foods and keeping a food journal, starting with gluten, then all grain, then cruciferous veggies, then nightshades, legumes, and on and on.

 By December 2017, I was in shambles, and my roommate told me about one of his best friends who had Crohn’s and reversed it with the ketogenic diet. I was desperate, and had been addictively reading about nutrition, fasting, and ketosis (I did just barely come across carnivore at this time, but I brushed it off because it seemed too intimidating, I loved sugar). 

After fasting all day Christmas Day 2017 and feeling much relieved, and then jumped into keto, hands to the plow no looking back. I starting feeling better and better, every week, month, and quarter I would keep saying, “Man, I haven’t felt this good since I was 18!” By around October 2018, after reading about Carnivore for a couple months, I was yearning for something more streamlined, easier, nutritious, and satiating, to get me to the next place (still had some residual anxiety, tiredness, skin issues, etc)— so I went to Carnivore and it just got better and better. My strength, mental acuity, and skin got even better. (Before keto- 2 pull ups, on Keto- 7 pull ups, on carnivore- 18 pull ups).

Improvements:

  • No digestive issues whatsoever
  • Best mental focus, attention, and mood since high school
  • no brain fog or headaches
  • best strength I’ve maybe ever had
  • much improved dental health
  • anxiety and depression are gone!
  • normal libido (hormonal balance)
  • little to no sunburn after hours in direct sunlight (first time in my life)
  • tumors/cysts disappeared
  • no back pain
  • no eye inflammation
  • clear and really smooth skin
  • steady energy all day

I am now absolutely loving this WOE and I don’t really see ever leaving it— although I am like 95% carnivore, I have some onions, garlic, mushrooms sometimes, and once a month or two I’ll split a sweet potato or make avocado pudding with friends. Meat does continue to taste better and better (I am soon going to get a quarter of beef!). 

I am eternally grateful for the work of Shawn Baker, especially Joe Rogan hosting Mikhaila Peterson (my first major exposure to Carnivore), the Zero Carb subreddit, Dr. Darren Schmidt, and countless others for making this possible, as well as friends and family, who have supported me through this hard time and brought immense healing. I’ve now been on keto for a year and a half and on zero carb for 9 months and am so filled with awe and so thankful.
