I have always struggled with my weight. At aged nine I was put on a 1000 calories a day diet; the first
of many attempts to be a healthy weight. In my twenties I was told I had a binge eating disorder and
that I should never try to restrict what I ate as this would lead to more bingeing. Apart from a brief
period when I was about 30 years old I had weighed between 210lbs and 270lbs.
In 2013, at the age of 42, I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both my feet. Six months later it had
also started in both hands. I questioned how ‘wear and tear’ could start simultaneously in both hands
and both feet, but I saw three consultants who all confirmed that I had osteoarthritis and not
rheumatoid arthritis. Over the next few months I was given cortisol injections and an increasing
number of pain killers. By October 2014 I was on 8 Paracetamol, 8 Tramadol and 6 Naproxen a day
and Amitriptyline at night to help me sleep. I had to stop taking the Naproxen after two years as it
caused a stomach ulcer so they changed me onto Gabapentin instead (9 a day). Despite all of these
pain killers I could barely walk a hundred metres with a stick and I needed special cutlery as I
The first step on my journey to health came in September 2017 when my partner decided to go ‘gluten
free’ to help his stomach problems. For convenience I did the same, not expecting any difference in
my own health. Within a couple of weeks I noticed that the food cravings, which I had always had,
seemed to have ceased. I was amazed as I had always believed that it was part of me.
At the beginning of 2018 we saw Jordan Peterson being interviewed. I bought his book for my
partner’s birthday and we read about Mikhaila’s health conditions and how they had been helped by
an elimination diet. Then I saw both Jordan and Mikhaila on Joe Rogan’s podcast. The before and
after pictures of Mikhaila were staggering. I also found other carnivores on YouTube such as Amber
O’Hearn and Dr Shawn Baker. Their videos showed me that this diet was sustainable long term and
that I would not be alone on my journey. I had nothing to lose so I decided to give it a go, not
expecting any change in my own health as mine was not the same type of arthritis as Mikhaila’s.
At first I started on meat, eggs and green veg before dropping the veg and just having meat and eggs. I
went fully carnivore on 12 th June 2018. On 1 st July my mother in law had a party for her 80 th birthday
and, for the first time in five years, I left my stick at home. A few days later we had a day out in
Whitby and I walked much farther than I could have done before. By the middle of July I was walking
several miles without any pain. I bought a pair of hiking boots at the beginning of August and we
were able to return to our old hobby of hiking on the coast near where we live. We have a route of
about six miles which we started doing almost every morning. The first week in September we had a
walking holiday in the Lake District in northwest England. I was able to hike all day just like I did
before I got the arthritis. It felt like an absolute miracle.
During that summer, I started to wean myself off the pain killers. This was awful!! I had been taking
the Tramadol for almost five years and coming off them was not a pleasant experience. I couldn’t
sleep and my whole body twitched terribly. I probably weaned myself off too quickly, but they were
capsules so I could cut them in half. Not too bad when you go from 8 a day to 7, but when you go
from 3 to 2 it’s a big jump. I took it a little more slowly coming off the Gabapentin (and I hadn’t been
on them so long) so that was a little easier. Finally I came off the Paracetamol and by the end of
September I was finally on no medication. When I told my doctor that I no longer needed my repeat
prescription because I was no longer in pain she was astounded; saying that she had “never heard of
such a thing”. Strangely she didn’t really seem very interested in how I had done this nor did she think
I should return to see the consultant who had diagnosed the arthritis.
One of the most striking side effects of the diet was my weight loss. Between May 2018 when I
started the elimination diet and December 2018 I lost 70lbs. I am a mature student and started the diet
while on my summer vacation from university. When I went back in September, people I knew
literally walked past me without recognising me. The two photographs I have included were taken in
July and December 2018 (just 5 months apart!).
Before starting on the carnivore diet I had also been suffering from menopausal symptoms, including
hot flushes and tinnitus. These started around the same time as my arthritis and I do believe that there
may be some link between the menopause and osteoarthritis. I have found books from the 1950s
which refer to menopausal arthritis and Dr Blake Donaldson’s book Strong Medicine describes how
he used a low card/carnivore diet to treat menopausal arthritis. I had tried several different hormone
replacement therapies but to no avail. Since going carnivore I have had no menopausal symptoms at
all; the hot flushes disappeared and after a few weeks I noticed that I didn’t have tinnitus any more.
I have had one or two ‘flare ups’ of pain and inflammation over the past two years. These have been
when I’ve eaten something other than eggs, meat, cheese or heavy whipping cream. For instance, on
Christmas Day I had some Christmas Pudding and Brandy sauce which left me in pain for a couple of
days. Recently I used a spray weed killer and that too seemed to cause inflammation despite me
wearing gloves when I used it. Other than that I have been pain free for almost two years and I never
intend to go back to my previous life.
More recently I have been experimenting with fasting. When you eat a meat only diet you don’t need
to eat as often so fasting became easy. I have always had a large appetite, but after a concerted period
of fasting (2 or 3 40 hour fasts per week over 6 weeks) I have noticed that I have started to feel full on
less food. I had never really had that ‘full’ feeling before so it felt very strange!
I hope that my experiences will encourage others to change their lives. I will be 50 this week and I
have never felt fitter or healthier in my life. I hike, swim and exercise regularly and am looking
forward to a more energetic, pain free future.
My name is Rebekah. I’ve always had a passion for health, nature, Fitness, and holistic nutrition / medicine.
I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 6th grade. In seventh grade, I ran into chronic pain. I was rushed to the emergency room with severe chest pains, and left with a diagnosis of costochondritis and degenerative disc. I was then diagnosed with OCD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, Narcolepsy, and a myriad of digestive issues such as gastroparesis, IBS, IBD, slow transit colon, Celiac and diverticulitis. I started regular Chiropractic treatments to address scoliosis and chronic pain. I went through multiple rounds of physical therapy, but symptoms continued to worsen. Shortly after graduating high school, I ran into chronic adrenal fatigue, crippling anxiety and pain so bad that I was bed bound. I had difficulty breathing, with frequent episodes of near- suffocation.
Desperate and afraid, I knew that I needed to dig deeper. I ventured to uncover the root of my issues, working with multiple functional medicine doctors, and embarked on a more strict/ personalized version of the ketogenic diet. I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease, colitis, Addisons, Hashimotos hypothyroid, CREST scleroderma, and a central nervous system disorder called Central Sensitization Syndrome (see youtube video by Dr. Sletten of Mayo Clinic). With Keto, various supplements, and support I was able to get off of Adderal, Clonazepam, and Ambien after being dependent on them for 13 years. I gained energy and focus, and reversed Hashimotos! My cystic acne also cleared completely. I was only just beginning to break free from the cage that I became burrowed into after years of quick “fixes” and excessive rounds of antibiotics ordered by traditional med doctors. I have continued to strip off the band-aids to uncover the sources and contributors to systemic disease that almost took my life, and more importantly my hope and joy.
After losing a severe amount of weight, I was diagnosed with chronic chlostridium difficule (C-Diff). I am resistant to all of the antibiotics, and have now had 3 fecal transplants. I was told that I should consider removing my colon, and that I needed a feeding tube. I refused and instead decided to commit to the one thing that I avoided trying for so long… Nothing brought relief or nourishment back into my body until I started the carnivore way of eating.
I have gained back 30 healthy pounds of mostly muscle, and have overcome almost all of my autoimmune issues. I have broken up deep layers of scar tissue that was taking over my body and limiting mobility; now there is new, strong, healthy muscle. My mood has never been more stable, and I am mentally resilient. No more swollen ankles or strange skin rashes/ hives. My energy is steady and dependable, and I’m sleeping the best I have in my entire life. I have gained so much freedom in this journey thus far and I am passionate and thrilled to help others overcome their battles, and reach their goals -beyond expectation!

I’ve been aware of/interested in the carnivore diet for a couple of years now, but for some reason I have only made the commitment to follow the principles of this diet for just under two months so far (commenced June 18 2018). Why it took me this long to jump on board; I can’t say for sure. Maybe I somehow felt that I deserved to keep on suffering? Or was I that addicted to the litany of “non-foods” that permeated my previous diet, despite the terrible effects they had on my body and mind? In any case, I am now on board with this way of eating, and I feel compelled to share my story in the hope that it can add to the growing number of testimonies you are collecting for this remarkable way of eating, as well as perhaps inspire others with similar issues to what I’ve had.
Since a very young age, I have had an excessive focus on my weight and shape due to many years as a dancer. I also am by nature a somewhat extreme person with addictive and OCD tendencies. By age 12 I had developed a starvation syndrome which led to weighing approximately 30kg however within a year, I started binge eating uncontrollably and weighed around 70kg by the time I was 15 years old. This may not sound especially heavy, but I am 5 foot 1 inch tall, with a very small bone structure, so I appeared extremely overweight at this level. To say I was miserable by this point is an understatement. My binge eating was constant every single day, and it felt like the most hopeless addiction which I couldn’t control. I had become very depressed and suicidal, engaging regularly in self-harm activities. At the time, I thought I was addicted to all “foods” but in hindsight, my binges were on sugar and carbohydrate based foods. I managed to shed some weight towards the age of 20, however I still carried a thick layer of fat on my body, and still experienced binge eating very regularly. It was at this point that I started vomiting up my food after a binge (bulimia), out of sheer desperation not to become heavy from all of the food I was pigging out on. Since I couldn’t control my cravings to binge, this became an extremely vicious cycle of binging and vomiting which continued almost constantly until very recently (I’m currently 32 years old). Looking back, I wonder how I lived through this hell for so long. I was frequently very depressed and often wished my life would end.
About 2 years ago, I started experiencing the most debilitating low energy during my everyday life, which I consulted several doctors about without getting any kind of answers or diagnosis. This made even the most basic activities like walking, talking or laughing to be difficult in the extreme. During these years, I was also put on Prozac and Zoloft (separately) which did not help my situation at all. Whilst I’ve never been a deliberate vegetarian, I’ve spent my entire life eating very little meat. I have been a sugar and carbohydrate addict for my entire life, which has been exacerbated by the bulimia. After the onset of my chronic low energy issues, I started experimenting with keto macros, however I was still including keto Franken foods such as bars and the like, which seemed to enhance cravings and cause regular relapses back into binging. I was also being pretty limited in my meat consumption so as not to screw the keto macros, so overall my energy levels were just as bad or worse on keto. In hindsight, I think my body was under stress from a long term lack of animal protein consumption, and my keto diet did not add much improvement to this nutritional inadequacy.
Moving forward now to the meaty (hahaha) part of my story, I experienced my last binge episode on June 18th of 2018, where I binged and vomited a bunch of quest bars. I think something switched inside me and I finally decided that enough was enough. I was going to kill myself if I kept on going down this path. I gave up everything that I was binging on; nuts, quest bars, chocolate with “fake” keto sugars in them. I started eating mostly beef, some eggs, cheese as a condiment, and a bit of cream in my coffee. I let go of all counting and portion control, instead simply eating as much as I feel like. In such a short space of time, the improvement in the way I feel is ground breaking. I have my energy back! I just feel good every single day. Furthermore, I don’t seem to crave any of the sugars and carbohydrates I previously binged on. The peace I am experiencing as a result of this is truly astounding. My eating disorder is in complete remission, simply from following a carnivorous way of eating. Shawn, I follow your social media accounts with gusto and I am so appreciative of what you do. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart for the amazing work you do in fighting for this cause. I have also provided before & after photos, however please bear in mind that I have not followed this diet for long, so the physical changes are not dramatic thus far. I do appear noticeably fluffier in the “before” pic, and I also believe that 6 full months on this diet will display further improvements in leanness and body composition. However for me, the two most important effects from this diet are the way it makes me feel, and the way it banishes my binge eating. If anyone is suffering from an illness or disorder which could be improved through diet, I strongly encourage you to start thinking for yourself and question everything (as Shawn says). There is too much garbage being fed to us in the world today both nutritionally and in the information we are given about what is supposedly healthy. Taking matters into your own hands could be the best thing you ever do for yourself.
Annie – 31 year vegetarian now carnivore
Let me tell you a bit about myself, I live in just outside of Brisbane, Australia, I’m 45 years old, have 4 daughters ranging from 19 to 11 years, I work five days a week and am studying a health sciences degree full-time online. I decided to do a Bachelor of Food and Nutrition, after I became obsessed with using food for medicine and good health. I want to help others regain their health as I have gained mine back since starting a ketogenic diet over four years ago, I’m now carnivore.
For as long as I can remember I have suffered from IBS issues – gut pain and cramping, explosive diarrhoea, severe constipation – first seeing a GP for it when I was 14 years old. I never had a weight issue until having my first baby, but it certainly became a huge issue for the next 15 years. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was pregnant with my first daughter and during two pregnancies had gestational diabetes. Over these years I also suffered terrible GORD, repetitive disc bulges, sleep issues, asthma, thrush, recurring chest, sinus and urinary tract infections, major anxiety and depression issues. I had allergy tests done, where I was allergic to 13 of the 16 things I had been tested for and was told I was pre-type 2 diabetic by my overweight GP, who told me I should just expect it as it was in my family.
About 5 years ago, my health was heading south rapidly, with almost daily headaches and weekly migraines. I had a strange turn one day where I blacked out while driving, with my then four-year-old in the car with me. Apparently, I was slurring like I was drunk, but I managed to get my little girl to call the ambulance. I have no recollection of the event, except that I came to with two ambulance officers in my car trying to establish what had happened to me. My husband and police were on the scene when I came to as well, but despite being taken to hospital and tests being done, I never found out what had happened to me – except that they thought the migraine I had, had caused the event.
A few months later I got very unwell with a chest infection, landing myself in hospital for 12 days. My asthma was in a very bad way and I could hardly walk the corridors in the hospital without bringing on an attack. I gained about 5 kilograms during my hospital stay and was referred to a dietician to try to get my weight and health under control. I followed her recommendations religiously as I hated what was happening to me, but all I managed to do was gain more weight. She made me feel like I couldn’t possibly have been following the guidelines she’d set for me and that I was cheating myself.
I’d heard cutting sugar from your diet was good, so I stopped adding sugar on my morning oats and cutting it back substantially from my home baking, which gained me a small win with a couple of kilos weightloss. In November 2014, I then saw a documentary that literally changed my life, featuring Dr Maryanne Demasi, Dr Peter Bruckner, Professor Tim Noakes and Dr Steve Phinney. It was about the low carb, high fat diet and so, fuelled with the small win I’d had from ditching the sugar from my diet, I thought I’d give it a go.
My weight dropped incredibly quickly and majority of my health issues all but disappeared. I haven’t even had a head cold in the four years since starting. Everyone at work gets sick over winter, but I have not as yet. LCHF cured my GORD, disc bulges, asthma, allergies, thrush and I never experienced any more chest, sinus or urinary tract infections. I got stricter with my food choices and went VLC/strict keto, all the while my weight was still slowly creeping off.
At this point I should say I had been a lazy vegetarian for 31 years. I say lazy, as I had eaten fish very occasionally for a few years but never too regularly. I had however been doing a lot of research, reading lots of studies and following some very intelligent people on Twitter. All my research had me concluding that although I was way healthier in my food choices now eating keto, I had to eat a lot more protein than I was. I introduced fish regularly and, much to the shock of my family, I started eating chicken again – it had been 31 years. I started feeling so much better almost immediately, stronger. I then caught wind of Dr Baker’s carnivore study, which, both research and my own curious nature, had me very interested in. Crazy right, as I was only eating chicken, fish and eggs? But I did it, very strictly, ditching coffee, cream, cheese and only eating the chicken, fish, eggs and drinking water. I had it in my head though that I wanted to be brave and try red meat and so set a personal goal to achieve that before the end of the study – I knew for optimal health it was for the best, but I had a lot of mental hurdles stopping me. It came to the last week of the study, I felt amazing but disappointed in myself for not giving red meat a go like I wanted, so one day on my way home from work, I bought a rib eye, cooked it and ate the whole thing. I believe I have eaten at least one piece of red meat every day since.
To date my overall weight loss is about 40kg (or 88lb), with a measurement loss of about 120cm (or 47 inch) total. Hormonally, I have re-gained the 4kg loss I experienced during the study, which I intend on shedding again in the new year. Let’s just say, being a woman is unfair sometimes and the one thing that no diet has helped with is my lifetime suffering from endometriosis. I’m having further surgery in the new year, so hopefully I can get on top of the fake hormones currently circulating my body causing these adverse effects.
So, what happened when I went completely carnivore? Whilst LCHF/Keto helped the majority of my conditions, I was still suffering bouts of IBS issues, some arthritic aches and anxiety. Since going carnivore, I have been able to ascertain that it was vegetables still causing my residual IBS and occasional arthritic soreness. I am physically so much stronger than I have ever been and the recovery from exercise is outstanding. Where I once would have been sore for days and in some instances great pain, I have minimal soreness and generally only the following day, if at all. My mental clarity has been the overwhelming improvement which has me off my medication for the first time in about 10 years. Mentally, I would never have been able to take on such a gruelling schedule of fulltime study, working 5 days a week and four kids before, but carnivore has allowed me that. The first-wave carnivore study began in August 2017, for a three-month duration but I have remained carnivore ever since. I intend on staying this way for the foreseeable future as well for the outstanding health effects it has had on my body and mind.
I’m from the Philippines and I’m 46 years old. I don’t follow any diet. I go by instinct mostly. I would just realize later on that whatever I was already eating out of instinct was actually a thing. Vegetarian, raw vegan, zero carb, paleo keto PKD, raw primal, — were labels I would learn after the fact.
For the first 20 years of my life, I ate well. Lots of pork, beef, bone marrow, liver, raw milk, and eggs. Like every Filipino, I also ate some starch in the form of steamed rice. Growing up in the rural countryside, I snacked on fresh coconuts and the best seasonal fruits in the tropics. I was very healthy growing up.
In the next 20 years, I turned vegetarian for ethical reasons. I became skin and bones. I was anemic. I was constantly fainting. I had low energy. Any doubts I had about the state of my health as a vegetarian disappeared when I had two miscarriages one after the other.
I was advised to gain body fat for a better chance at pregnancy. Desperate to put on fat, I ate at restaurants for one year. Nothing was off limits. It worked. I gained body fat. But my hips, wrists, and back hurt like crazy. I would wake up with crippling joint pain. I couldn’t even do light exercises such as yoga.
That’s when I went raw vegan. Just fresh fruits and vegetables plus nuts and seeds. I was hungry all the time. I was grazing the whole day. It was an improvement from one year of eating just about anything at restaurants. I was less inflamed. But I was having diarrhea all the time. I was constantly bloated. My bones were cracking and my hair was falling out. I felt old. I was only 43 then.
Then I started craving meat, lots of meat. For one year, I ate nothing but steak everyday. It seems extreme, but that was what my body demanded. I had no idea how healing meat could be. In less than a week, no more joint pains, no more hair loss, better skin, stronger bones, more restful sleep, improved mood, no more bloat, zero digestive issues. I could go on and on. But when I ate anything other than plain meat, joint pains returned. I also started to have skin reactions in the form of eczema if I ate eggs, dairy, or even the tiniest amount of plant matter in seasonings.
After 14 months of eating steak everyday, I started to crave organ meats and more fats. Pork belly and liver or bone marrow became my staple. I wasn’t aware of it at the time but I was already eating PKD or Paleo Keto style.
A month into PKD, I started craving raw meat. After two months of PKD, the last month being raw PKD, I felt invincible. I added back raw eggs, raw dairy, and a few bites of fresh seasonal fruits. To my surprise, I had zero issues. No crippling joint pains or annoying eczema lasting many days like they used to.
I’m grateful I discovered the amazing healing properties of meat, the one food I thought was so unhealthy I went to great lengths to avoid it. How so wrong I was. The struggle against brainwashing is real. Thank goodness I stumbled upon PKD. I’m glad I trusted my body when I had a craving for raw meat, raw eggs, and raw dairy. I’ve found perfect health at last eating foods I naturally love.
I had been a long time martial artist with several black belts and at one time was a successful and healthy person.
Then I got really, really sick. Over the next decade and a half I gained 200lbs, lost the ability work and eventually lost the majority of use of my hands and feet due to the bone deformities that came over time.
My illness began in 2003 when I was diagnosed with a severe black mould infection that caused me to go stone deaf for 2 and a half months due to the congestion it caused in my sinuses and throat and lungs. a couple of days on IV antibiotics and the damage was done.
I had tried to follow the dietary guidelines my doctors had provided but they did nothing but make me sicker, fatter and less and less mobile.
On December 15, 2017 I weighed 401.6lbs with a BMI of about 51. I could barely move, had little use of my hands and living on a TIGHT budget with two teenage sons all while living on disability benefits.
I couldn’t walk more than 20-30 steps without collapsing from pain unless I had a cane and my hands were so weak I could not pick up a 5lb dumbbell.
I decided to follow the advice I was getting from a couple of channels but I found I was always coming back to the same sources for confirmation on what other “experts” were saying.
I also saw the Joe Rogan Experience with Dr. Shawn Baker and I knew I’d found the right thing for me.
I started keto/carnivory in January 2018 and have not looked back. I have switched back and forth from keto and carnivory but only for budget reasons. I always feel my best the greater ratio of meat I eat.
I’m now up at 4:45am daily for a 3km (2mile) walk then a quick simple session at the gym for a few sets of push, pull, lift or squat and then home to wake up my teen sons for school.
I’m a single parent too.
I’m not going to try and pretend I’ve developed into a ripped adonis. My skin started at <80% psoriatic coverage so it was a ruin to begin with. That coverage is down to under 40% now. I look more like a middle aged man wrapped in a slightly blown airbag but time will bring that under control as well.
My weight is now 212.3lbs as of December 31, 2018 and that’s after gaining 3.6lbs over Xmas. I’m aiming for a final body weight of 185lbs with a body fat of less than 15%. I figure I’ll hit that milestone eventually but no schedules just results as the body can make them.

PS: Keto/carnivory also helped me get out of a 10 year opioid prescription that was at over 100mg of dilaudid (hydromorphone contin) a day.
Now I’m opioid free.
This I can anecdotally correlate with my dietary changes as the digestive horrors and nerve regrowth caused by detox and opioid withdrawal were radically reduced by the constant monitoring of my electrolytes, digestive ease of meat and the massive reduction of inflammation. I’d tried to reduce my meds MANY times and was almost driven insane by the pain and withdrawal symptoms within mere hours.
Not so once I had switched my body from sugars and carbs to protein and fats.
Coupled with a dosage reduction to use only as much as needed to abate the worst withdrawal symptoms over time and the effect can’t be argued with me. That’s not to say it was easy but it was infinitely easier with the dietary changes.
Simply put, meat does heal.
UPDATE: As of this morning April 29, 2019 my weight is down to 179.68 lbs and I’m feeling better than I have in years. In mid-January I injured myself and suffered a pretty horrible abdominal tear and herniation. I had surgery. I now have a rather large titanium mesh implant and in the process discovered a previous herniation I hadn’t known was there but was causing some issues. These are no longer an issue and I have been progressing at a steady pace.
I’ve been shifting my intake across the spectrum of animal products to try and optimize my own health and keep coming back to beef, pork, salmon and eggs as my “GO TO” base. My sons have also followed along. Since the surgery on March 10, 2019 I’ve increased my daily activity to a level I haven’t been capable of since my 30s.I’m also consuming between 2900-3600 Kcal/day and am seeing steady changes in my body composition as I build muscle and lose fat.
I’m not only working out 2-4 times a week with kettlebells, resistance bands and calisthenics but go to a gym for my heavier full body workouts and have increased my “road time” walking to as much as 8 miles in a day. Most days I average 4-6 miles from what started as fighting to make it 10 minutes at a time way back when I started all this (I thank/blame Stan Efferding). If not for a really damaged foot I would be (actually am but…) running these distances instead of walking but limits are there to be surpassed.
I now get up at 4:00am and haven’y used an alarm in almost a year now. I do 15-20 minutes of yoga, get dressed for the weather and hit the road for a 3-6 km walk depending on whether or not I go to the gym, grab a coffee or hit the gym and then back home so I can get my teen sons up for school at 6:30 am. After they’re off I do all the usual daily routines and after getting a full meal cooked and cleaned up I go for another walk of a few km and spend 30-45 minutes after that doing basic flexibility stretches and physiotherapy exercises for the parts of me that are still kinda broken.
The degree of recovery my body has experienced has dumbfounded my doctors. I have been able to achieve well and far beyond what they had said I would ever be capable of and they now listen when tell them how I’m doing it. A nurse who spoke to me after my surgery is now going carnivore from paleo and she’s having great results too. It work and as people hear and see the truth in US they will be able to disregard the propagandist nonsense saturating the media these days. As carnivores we are N=Many.
Thanks again for the opportunity to share my story and for being a source of knowledge that has LITERALLY saved my life and restored a sick, depressed, disabled, addicted and morbidly obese horror show back to a healthy living, clean, active dad.
In the included pictures are two current and one of my in November 2017 for my 51st birthday and a look at just how massive I’d become in December of 2017 at 401.6 lbs. There is no comparison.
What Happened to Me:
In January 2016 I was diagnosed with Cauda Equina Syndrome after suffering a massive central disc herniation at L5-S1. This is a rare syndrome caused by compression of the cauda equina which is the horse tail of nerves connected to the spinal cord in the lumbar spine. Prior to this event I suffered 2 years of severe back pain and headaches after being misdiagnosed and undergoing a very unnecessary spinal tap and subsequent blood patch for a CSF leak in 2014. Prior to this the only time I ever went to a Doctor was for a yearly check-up.
During this time I experienced a decline in my neurologic function from the waist down until I ultimately woke up one morning paralyzed from the waist down, unable to move my feet or legs and with complete loss of bladder control. I was also in suicidal level pain. Rather than go to the hospital network I was dealing with for 2 years, I had a friend drive me to another hospital Emergency Dept where I underwent an Emergency MRI, my first one and was transported to a state of the art spine center for emergency neurosurgery to decompress my cauda equina.
After surgery my pain and chronic 2 year headache was gone. I was left barely able to walk, my legs very weak and with right foot drop. I was unable to feel most of my right leg and right foot. My injury was incomplete and a combination of sensory and motor dysfunction. Although my neurosurgeon and the spine center were amazing and restored my faith in the Medical system, there was little research about Cauda Equina Syndrome, and they were not quite sure what to do with me.
Having a background in healthcare myself (I am a nurse and a pharmacist), I took massive drastic action because I had nothing to lose by trying. The first of which was getting myself discharged from the spine center with home services and this is where my experiment began.
My Full Recovery 2.5 years later:
After reading PubMed daily and over 500 papers and books during my 2 year recovery, I started implementing the science I was reading. I started a ketogenic diet 80/15/5, hydrating with a gallon of water a day so my discs were getting the raw materials they needed to heal via diffusion during restorative sleep. The next thing I did was start training everyday with the rehab exercises to correct my gait, muscle imbalances and build my endurance. Everyday I spent time visualizing my nerves regenerating and using what I learned about epigenetics from Bruce Lipton. I kept my mindset strong and positive at all times in a state of unwavering faith and determination.
The strange thing I noticed myself doing was intuitively gravitating towards eating a more meat based diet. The past 5 months my carbs have reduced dramatically and I have more carnivore days. I truly believe providing my nerves with an alternative fuel source in the form of ketones is the reason they recovered and for the full recovery I was fortunate to have. I also believe this way of eating generated the stem cells in my body I needed to repair L5-S1. My injury was a peripheral nerve injury which is more forgiving than a spinal cord injury. There is no way anyone can tell me that nerves can not regenerate or recover. It is possible and it is a slow process.
The final result of my recovery experiment:
- Pain Free
- Medication Free
- 20 pound maintained fat loss and overhaul of body composition.
- Increased flexibility
- Complete resolution of right foot drop
- Complete return of motor and sensory function in my legs and feet minus 2 toes on my right foot (still have hope) and my saddle.
- Complete return of bladder and resolution of saddle anesthesia.
- Correction of gait and able to walk normal
- Ran a 5k in under 35 minutes
- Able to train like Arnold in the gym with weights again
- More endurance in training
- Return to my full-time pharmacy job
- As a side benefit cured from PCOS, eczema resolved and glowing wrinkle free skin.
- A spine that my neurosurgeon said looks better than the general population
- Resolution of hypertrophy and inflammation at L5-S1 facet joint
- Improved glute and core strength resulting in increased lumbar spine stabilization.
- In the best shape of my life at 40 years old
I shared my story in the hope it will add value and be of help to someone dealing with a neurological condition. Don’t be afraid to empower yourself and work outside the healthcare system to find your cure. I am a 29 year old man living in New York. I began my low carb journey at 26 and not long after I was diagnosed with Crohn’s. I went whole hog into the Primal Blueprint lifestyle and I saw incredible benefits. I dropped 60 lbs, and I saw a huge benefit in how I felt daily and my intestines had improved. Slowly over time I kept eliminating foods from my diet: potatoes of all kinds, nuts, squashes, tomatoes, fruits, and it got to the point where I was eating meats and greens with the rare deviation. Then I listened to the interview on the JRE podcast with Dr. Baker. It stuck with me, though I was skeptical at first.
As March came around I decided to experiment and take the step to eating a Carnivore diet. I joined the facebook group and I read other’s stories to find inspiration and guidance. I ate 2-2.5 lbs of mostly ground beef, chicken thighs, some ground turkey, and around 6-8 eggs daily, with some goat cheese and butter thrown in occasionally. I continued to drink coffee, tea, and seltzer. I ate twice daily at lunch and dinner time. The rare snack was either salami or pork rinds.
Because I already knew to increase my salt intake and I had been fat adapted the transition was not difficult for me, but I did notice a challenge in my calisthenics based workouts early on in that I struggled at first but then it became easier.
The first thing I noticed is that my hunger levels surged very high, then dropped significantly. I’m curious how my Crohn’s has impeded my absorption, if at all. My energy levels were more consistent throughout the day. Previously there would be a dull fatigue towards the end but I’m more of a stable calm on carnivore. But most of all I felt the lingering inflammation in my gut decrease and my bowel movements (after the first week) were the most consistently solid and easy passings I have had in a long time. The inflammation I felt was in the upper right and lower left of my abdomen (duodenum and colon) and they were tender to light prodding. They are now far less tender and I don’t feel the swelling as I did before.
As for weigh loss: I did not drop much weight, but I did notice a difference in my measurements, my muscles were slightly bigger and definitely more dense, my waist was thinner, and I’m willing to bet my bone density increased. I have found a lot of benefit in the carnivore diet. But I’m an experimental person and I know I’m going to want to reintroduce fermented foods and mushrooms, maybe the occasional plant, but I know now the best way to return to baseline and reclaim my health. It’s easy to do and it’s very tasty.
